I have been using ready-made Barnaul 308 caliber cartridges for a long time. They are semi-army-type, with a steel brass, unsuitable for reload, but reliable in self-loading weapons, and cheap.

But recently, the manufacturer offered a new cartridge with a heavy bullet, 10.9 grams (the photo shows that the lead exposure in the head is greater). The guys tried and doubted - the lead was clearly not the same as usual, lighter. In short, here's what was found in a piece of borscht meat. The softer lead simply tore the shell of the bullet.
Most likely, there is no antimony in the composition, so lead is softer (and cheaper), and it also does not connect to the shell.
It is unlikely that anyone here will encounter such cartridges, but they exist. I will write to the factory.

The photo of the moose has not been saved, there is only a photo of borscht. By the way, it is prepared like this: moose meat is boiled for 2-3 hours, then remove the meat (preferably brisket) and disassemble it into edible pieces.
Toasted chopped onions and toasted carrots and beets grated on a coarse grater, with the addition of tomato paste, are successively poured into the broth. Then sliced potatoes, then sliced cabbage, you can also have sliced bell peppers and eggplant. When the potatoes are ready, the borscht is ready, add meat. A spoonful of sour cream, bread and 100 grams are added to the plate.

Weapon: 16 inch barreled Bergara SP in .308 win.
Ammo: Factory loaded 150gr. Federal Power Shock (blue box).
Game: Fully mature Nilgai antelope bull, Approximately 530 pounds live weight.
Distance of shot: approx 150 yards.
Hunt: spotted this bull from the vehicle, immediately recognized his stature and maturity. Nearly impossible to judge horns on them from distance. (Just look for an old bull as maturity is the true trophy for Nilgai imo)
So we exit with sticks and walk 100 yards and find him again (Lucky). Sticks go up, one shot in crease of shoulder and he went 40 yards and fell over dead. Bullet found on off side ribs all the way up to skin.
Caveat: I personally believe that the very short 16 inch barrel gives me NO more than 2550 FPS of muzzle velocity. That slow starting speed allows this cheap soft point to retain its weight and to penetrate in a straight line. I would not recommend 150gr power shock for Nilgai with standard velocity’s. This is a great example of matching speed, weight and intended game. It’s interesting to say the least. Barnes will always be the best medicine for Nilgai, but not at 2300 fps impact velocity… so I match my ammo to the expected speeds and it worked out.

I find the idea of creating a bullet database and updating it regularly extremely informative. However, the crucial question I ask myself is who collects all the data from this thread and compiles it into a database.

For example, I would be very interested to know whether the length of the blood trail (flight distance after the shot) is the same for 300 grains and 350 grains in .375 H&H Magnum with similar shot placement and shooting distance, identical bullet design (e.g., Woodleigh RN) and game species (e.g., buffalo), or whether there are any differences. And, of course, such results would not be independent of the number of reports.

Distance of shot: approx 90 yards.
Hard quartering away shot. Perfectly placed by a young hunter to sneak it into the rear shoulder at a hard angle. It hit that last few ribs and went almost 2 feet hitting both lungs. The bullet had complete jacket-core separation. The copper jacket you see was found in the off side shoulder. Not making it through the bone. The lungs were damaged well and the deer only went 25 yards, Dead on his feet.

I’d say this is about the max for this load. Very deadly and adequate on large deer, but any more dense game I would be worried about having to hit a shoulder on impact, say if a larger animal was quartering to you.

As we all know ELD-X is designed for impacts really past 300 yards. When you have those impact velocity inside 150 yards it’s gets torn apart. Which is ok on deer for some hunters

Woodleigh 400 grain Hydro from a 416 Rigby. Elephant, 20 mts just in front of ear through zygomatic arch. MV2550fps Retained weight. Best I can tell it lost .1grain

Woodleigh 410 grain Weldcore SP 416Rigby. Retained weight 404grains. Gemsbok about 200 mts quartering front shot. Found opposite side past rib cage. MV2450fps. Interesting the Hydro is 100fps faster but both have the same primer and powder type and charge. Bertram 400grain soft points MV same as the Woodleigh 410 WC. All print to same point of impact out to 100mts. I have not compared all 3 past that.

Years ago, I loaded .270 Winchester for a friend who had a TC bolt actioned rifle. I loaded 140gr. Hornady Interlock BTSP at 2,940fps with H or IMR4931, I don't remember, but I did chronograph the ammo and accuracy tested it, shooting about 3/4" at 100 meters. Neil was out hunting with my bro and shot a decent sized black bear about 6' squared, with the load, broadside through the ribs at approximately 80yards. The bullet took out 3 or 4 ribs on the off side and exited. The bear dropped at the shot. Neil was able to put the toe of his felt-pack Sorels inside the exit hole right up to the boot laces. That would make the exit hole about 5" in diameter. The front legs, loin and hind legs were salvageable.

1) Kudu bull shot at 200 meters. Entrance wound at the base of the neck and my bullet was recovered under the skin behind the opposite shoulder.
He dropped on the spot.

Weight retention : 64 gr = 44.7 %


2) Young kudu bull shot at 260 meters. The bullet hit a branch just before and the noise of the impact was definitely not like the one we are used to.
He was full broadside and the bullet hit him just behind the shoulder. He ran less than 50 meters and fell down. The entrance wound was pretty big and the bullet clearly tumbled. We recovered it in the ribs on the other side.

The lead core is out of the jacket.
Weight retention : 37 gr = 25.9 %


3) Nyala bull shot at 180 meters with a quatering toward shot. Dropped on the spot !
The entrance wound is at the base of the neck and my bullet was found in the last ribs on the other side.

Weight retention : 46.2 gr = 32.3 %

The ELD-X works on games up to kudus, but there are much better options anyway.....if available of course ! Now, I'm waiting Norma Bondstrike that should be delivered next days hopefully.

Cheers and Nice shooting. You are seriously about to make me get a box of 130ttsx to try in my 16 inch 308. I wonder what I should expect? I tried 168s and it was just to slow and was lack luster on a buck. 130s should open up a little more.
