If any of you, like me, have wanted, listed after or actually owned Barnard Rufle, made in New Zealand, the photo below may be of interest!!
My Wufe, Sue and I have just returned from a 2 week trip to New Zealand that was originally based on us attending a Pink Floyd cover show in Napier, NZ.
We could see the show, which are just brilliant, but sadly the don't tour Australia any more due venue difficulties and the cost of travel in a much larger country.
So we planned a trip that culminated in Napier and surrounds visiting elderly friends of my from a very distant youth, while hunting deer from the age of 14 or so.
The first 3 people we visited were a Girl knew in High school 55 years ago, a friend who was on my recruit intake when I joined the NZ Government Meat Inspection service in 1972 as a young and dumb teenager, a great education but a 40 year future standing on a slaughter board didn't appeal!
Did my time and got out to become eventually a Professional Fireman.
Best job in the world!!
Then a guy off my recruit course for the Fire Service in 1981.
Next was the first guy I personally met who was involved in the NZ Deerstalkers Association.
His name is Peter Barnard, the owner of Barnard Firearms. He is fast approaching 84 and his youngest son, BJ, in the pic was 5 months old when I met his Dad.
BJ is now 54 and a brilliant Tool Maker with his own business here in Australia.
Pete showed me some of his design rifles, some range ready, and others as unfinished actions.
I still want one!!!
PS, we didn't get to the concert, a dodgy Chinese takeaway put the lead guitarist in hospital and 2 shows were cancelled, with alternate dates after we came home to Canberra.
I'm the good looking one in pink.
