From browsing threads on here I’ve noticed a trend towards RMR style sights on doubles and large caliber bolt guns. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with mounting one on a scope similar to how the three gun crowd is doing. I’ve got a tikka 300 win mag with a 4-12x50 Leupold I originally set up with plans for moose in the bogs of Newfoundland. It’s became my go to rifle the last year or so. ( this is the point we’re all of you wiser gentlemen should say I told you so ) I’m considering mounting a rmr on the scope for close in work on bears. I do some predator calling for them yearly and also occasionally jump one off baits on the way in.

I like the Trijicon RMR on my Merkel 470 double rifle.

If you want to try it, go for it.The AR people have proven that the concept works. The military uses it too.

Do you have pic rail that the scope is mounted on? If so, an offset mount off the rail is far better than an side mount off a scope. I have tried every combination I could imagine, the offset mounted directly to the pic rail has worked best for me.

This is the one I have settled on using: https://www.trex-arms.com/store/T-REX-Offset-Mount/

I’ve considered the 45 degree mounts but there not offered currently for a left hander

I can see tipping a 223 cal AR15 on its side for a close range shot. Dont think Id like to do it with a DGR cal rifle though.

I’m only looking to do it on a 300wm and then probably above the scope not canted

I run a 2.5-10 power Kahles on my 300H&H. That gives me a magnification range that works for me from 0-500 which for me is the working range of that rifle. I feel like a red dot on top of the scope would make life more confusing rather than adding any value. But I cant say I have tried it personally.

With a 50mm scope, you are going to have a crazy offset if you piggyback it. Even on an ACOG, the top mounted RMR wasn't much to use to me. You will have to break your cheek weld to even see though it, you will have to calculate the offset and then you are shooting a 300wm with you head off the stock.

Just giving you some personal experience. I have used an RMR quite a bit on a variety of rifles, they are awesome, but keeping them close to bore is a lesson learned for a ton of guys using them piggybacked in real life situations.

Would they interfere with the action canted under the scope on the left side of a left eject rifle? I’m looking a delta point rmr my gunsmith deals Leupolds and I see they make a mount similar to what you sent me the link for

You will have to go forward enough to clear it all. Normally, I want them as far back as I can, that would be on a gas gun, but that isn't going to work on a bolt gun. But I really think even being further forward than you normally want is going to be better than a piggyback setup.

I don’t think I can clear the action

Way too bulky. I really don't see any need for it. I shot this gemsbuck incoming (charging?) at less than twenty yards ... in the heart ... and again in the heart running by at twelve yards. The rifle was my 30-06 Springfield with 3-9x scope turned down to 3x. No problem.

Try it again only this time make it a black bear in the in the dark coming or going from a stand through a stand of burnt pine.

If you are willing to change scopes, the Leupold VX5 in 2-10 with the illuminated duplex will do what you need to do.

On 2x with the red dot, it has a huge field of view and I use mine with both eyes open.

At 10x, you’re good way out there.

I also have a Meopta 1.7-10 with illuminated 4 reticle. The field at 1.7 is tremendous.

Not really interested in changing the scope I’ve had a dial cut for a pet load that rifle will group amazingly.

I would not shoot an animal in the dark. Nor would I shoot one over bait. If I was worried about shooting a bear after dark, I would simply remove the scope and/or bring a can of bear spray. They're always around but I've never had a problem. But I don't bother them while they're eating jelly donuts. That might make me cranky too.
