About to lose my mind

Howdy all at AH,

Only one question...how do you survive waiting? I'm about to lose my mind with impatience.

Shoot your rifle, read AH, repeat....:ROFLMAO:

As others have said, practice, practice, practice, don't try to cram too many animals in to one trip and don't get your heart set on one specific animal. Africa will give you what you want most but not all of the time. Study your shot placement photos, they are on this site. Welcome to the site but remember, there is NO KNOWN CURE for the urge to return. ;)

Sage advice just soak it in and let it happen.

You won't need to take as much stuff as you think you do; it doesn't take long to get 50 lbs. of things in the suitcase.

Fly Delta out of KCI-ATL-JNB and book Economy Comfort/Plus. It's WORTH the extra $$$. Especially if the BIL is still as big a boy I remember. :ROFLMAO: You get him and Drom into a wrestling match is definitely two bulls in a china closet.

I had Dan Galetti from up in NKC do all of my taxidermy. He's hunted with Drom also.

I won't comment on changes in @LegalEagle 's physique but that's probably good advice coming from a skinny giant. I have cranky knees make long flights painful.

We talked to Dan Galetti @ the KC show.

For the umpteenth time welcome to AH. My son who lives in KC and I attended the SCI Expo in KC as well. In addition to the preparations you are already making, contact some of the references your outfitter provided. We made several phone calls to folks that had hunted with our outfitter previously. You can peruse the existing AH Posts to see what members have hunted with Somerby Safaris and PM (personal Message) through AH. Then set up a mutually convenient time for a phone call. Another thing that you can do is start reloading your own ammo if you don't Practice shooting off sticks. There are no shooting benches in the bush. You can use a small caliber rifle (read a 22 or 17 HMR) for your "stick" practice, it is the technique that you want to master. Then a couple of months before you leave use your hunting rifles off the sticks. I second the suggestion of flying in Delta's Economy Comfort seats. My boys and I are not tall, but we are broad shouldered. The extra room was well worth the $$. Hunting in Africa is an absolute blast, return trips are not a possibility, they are a given. Enjoy the whole experience!!

One thing nice about the long international flights is that no one gives you a hard time for getting up and walking around, stretching, etc. The galley is always open for drinks, water, etc. Definitely drink plenty of water on the flight. You won't believe how quickly you can get dehydrated in a pressurized tin can.

Absolutely right. I had dinner not long after Patrick picked me up, and with the couple hours drive to the lodge I was quite parched at bed time

Welcome to AH!

Pick up any book from Capstick, Ruark, or Selous but be warned that they can be a double edged sword when it comes to waiting on your first trip. They can let you dream and pass the time sharing their experiences but they can also work you into a bit of a frenzy. Save at least one of them for the time spent on the plane.

Enjoy your trip and I look forward to hearing of your adventures.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
