Welcome to AH Mark! Who will you be hunting with and what animals are on your list?
I will be shareing my hunt with my wife and three of my children .My two boys and I will be in persuit of kudu, gemsbok ,impala, zebra ,warthog and wildebeest. We are also keeping an open mind to springbuck and duiker. My wife is a non hunter and my daughter has shot hogs and whitetail, so we need to come up with a few non-hunting things to do that makes there trip a trip of a life time. Swartruggens is our destination for a safari with Africa Maximum safaris, so any and all ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to AH, Mark !

It´s not as great as you´ve heard, it´s better.

Welcome to the forum @MikeM enjoy the time here sir!

Welcome Mark!

For non hunting family activities it really depends upon what your family enjoys.. I'm more familiar with the EC where options abound. Not sure what is up in that area your going to other than good hunting.

If you have the budget and time here's a thought;
An associate of mine who hunted that area took the Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape town and had the most dangerous experience of his whole trip while on board.... He spilled hot coffee on himself.

They are an older couple but very active and enjoyed it immensely. Lots of stuff in the Cape Town area including bus tours of the city, Table Mountain, great beaches, and you can rent a car and drive out the Cape of good Hope.

But talk to your outfitter as well...
Have you seen what he offers? The elephant back safari looks interesting? Hot air balloon?

On our first trip my wife made a list of all the animals, birds, even plants and insects she saw... If it is your first time, there are so many new things it overwhelms your senses. By the end of day one she had 20 animals on her list... A lot of them from the drive into camp the evening before. Speaking of which, be sure to get your PH to take you and the family out on a night drive with a spot light. Or 2 or 3, even take a couple real good flash lights with... If you shop around you can get pretty decent LED lights for $5-10 and let each kid use one... Then make gifts of them to the trackers and camp staff.

If you have more time than money, rent a car and do a self guided tour around the area or even pop over to Kruger or some other parks that rent out bungalows reasonably. Read my Zimbabwe report on our tour of Kruger or ask and I'll provide more info but it was about $90/night plus some night game drives and the car rental and food...

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your safari. Africa truly is a magical land.

One thing that you might consider is going to Victoria falls in Zim. I think it was Action Bob that did that and wrote a report. We stole the idea. Spent essentially 3 days there. Got over jet lag and the wife had a great time. Then it was on to the hunting. Should be some activities that the outfitter can suggest. Bruce

Welcome and congrats on your up coming hunt. I just returned from my first safari after a lifetime of dreaming. It's a 1000 times better than you can ever imagine!!!! Springbok wasn't high on my list until we hunted them and it ended up being one of the most fun hunts of the whole trip. It's an excellent trophy and an outstanding hunt. I'm addicted to the little guys now and want to go back to get all the color variants one day. I would highly recommend hunting them if you have the chance. Congrats, the wait is a killer but it will be here before you know it.

I hope it is as great as I have heard . I have every intention of many African safaris to come.

I was only going once, to fulfill a lifelong dream. Next May will be hunt #4. :D

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
