A beautiful civilian Original Mauser Type B hunting rifle built in Oberndorf on a commercial 98' action fitted originally with double set triggers, since converted to traditional single two stage trigger, and magazine floorplate opening by lever key. Safety is converted to two position side safety to allow low mounting of rifle scope. Safety locks bolt handle when on SAFE.
The 24" round barrel, with first type stepped profile, is chambered for the unique 8x57NORM which has a 0.321" diameter bore, allowing the usage of both .318 as well as .323 diameter bullets, ie. can safely shoot both J and S bore cartridges. NORM stands for 'Normalised', a term used by Mauser to indicate a dual-cartridge designation. The mouth of the 8x57 case expands sufficiently to release the 0.323" bullet of course, part of the dual cartridge design in chamber construction. The rifle is very accurate with both J and S bore ammunition, and has no pressure signs with either.
Its bore is absolutely perfect and shoots accurately.
The sighting relies on a platinum lined three-leaf (two folding) rear sight regulated on a small silver bead front sight seated on an elongated knurled ramp, protected by the very rare and original sight hood. The fixed middle standing sight is regulated in a wide V format to zero at 50 yds with 196g ammunition, it is very fast indeed.
The 14½" LOP stock, made of quiet French walnut, bears a slim schnabel ending forend and a steel capped checkered grip while the horn butt plate is monogrammed interlacing reminiscent of the Oberndorf Mauser marking that adorns the receiver left side wall.
The action remains the traditional Mauser 98 in commercial configuration, with its elegant pear-shaped bolt handle, beautifully lowered and shaped to allow usage of a rifle scope at low mounting height.
The slow rust bluing, the wood bears some insignificant marks, all the parts are numbered at the same serial number except for the trigger, which is replaced with a very high quality 1909 Argentine unit.
The rifle has been fitted with new EAW clawmounts and matching rings, likely replacing original Suhler or AKAH clawmounts. The rings are 1"/26mm and when fitted to a scope, lock like a vault with zero vertical or horizontal movement. The rifle holds zero and returns to perfect zero. Please note that the rifle is not for sale with the rifle scope pictured, nor is the sling for sale. The EAW scope rings in unison with the bolt handle, allow for perfectly low mounting of a straight tube scope.The fitting of current EAW bases, allows alternative and new rings to be fitted with relative ease and minor fitting to new rings of various heights or diameters, should this be desired.
This rifle is in excellent conservation condition, and, of course, it functions flawlessly
Approx. 60 once fired Norma cases in their original boxes will be provided with this rifle.
