7mm rem mag ammo for plains game

I made my first African hunt in 2000. Because of complictions of very nasty divorce I couldn't use my own rifle and borrowed a Rem 700 in 7mm RM with 140 gr Nosler BT bullets. The Outfitter and PHs all said that those bullets were a poor choice, but by the end of the week, I had used them to make one shot kills on my Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Bushbuck, Blesbok, and 2 Impalas.

On my next South African hunt I used my own Rem 700 7mm RM, but shooting 160 gr Nosler Accubonds. I hunted multiple properties on that trip, and one of my PHs, who also handloaded for his own 7mm RM, was continuallly impressed with the large internal wound channels that my 160 gr Accubonds made.

Anyone consider asking your outfitter?

Two of my friends went on a Namibian PG hunt. They had separate PHs. One friend, who was an excellent shot, brought his .270 and the other brought a .338 WM. When the got there, the PH of my friend with his .270 flat out said that the .270 was too small.

At the end of each day's campfire they would compare hunts, and the PH with George and his .270 would proudly announce the one shot kills the .270 had made, while Tim's PH would moan about the multiple shots on each animal from the .338 WM.

At the end of the hunt, George's PH was so impressed with the many one shot kills the .270 had made that he said he would recommend a .270 to future clients.

Well, if you can do that with a Nosler BT, then why wouldn't a 140 gr TTSX be a death ray since speed kills with those? How fast were the BT's?

7 mag is fine for plains game. You will need some softs for buffalo.
I’ve shot several animals with the 7mag in Africa from duiker and steenbok to kudu and waterbuck using 154gr Hornady. Don’t remember what the exact bullet was but worked just fine.

Hornady flat based 154's have killed deer in my 7x57. Glad to hear they hold up to 7 mag velocities. Did you recover any to see how they held up?

Planning on hunting in May of 2026..Taking a 7mm rem mag for plains game and a 458 win mag for buffalo. Wanting to know if 168 gr is good for plains game and nosler 500 gr solids are ok for buffalo

The only 168's I know are Hornady boat tail cup and core. I would NOT GO WITH a boat tail cup and core. I have seen them easily dump the core, and the cup look as though it wasn't even damaged or stressed--just dumped the core. It is disconcerting to me to find the empty copper cup, even if I managed to bring down the game. And if it happens on only a white tail deer, and only shooting a 7x57, will it even get the job done on larger Africa tough game at magnum velocity?

Have used rem corelok they work but to break up a bit ....PPU SP worked well and the local brew PMP or something was also fine....if shot placement is good nearly all modern bullets will work ...so whatever is accurate in your rifle.

Hornady flat based 154's have killed deer in my 7x57. Glad to hear they hold up to 7 mag velocities. Did you recover any to see how they held up?

I did, the single bullet came out of a bushpig, the bullet on the left came out of a waterbucks opposite shoulder at 287yds. the bullet on the right was in a kudu shot in the neck at 100yds.
All were lodged in the skin on the opposite side from impact.
They could’ve held together a little better but the animals didnt seem to care.
