I have a safari planned for June and would like to take my Adams&Co hammer double in .577BPE. My stash of .577 bullets has dwindled to not nearly enough to load, practice, and take on safari. This gun shoots the Woodleigh 650gr soft point very well. I can find no one with stock of that bullet. Does anyone have some they could sell me?

Thanks in advance,

Ed Z

If you can buy in Belgium, get in touch with Wim Degol, he produces the so called Starkmantel (heavy jacket bullets).

wim.degol@telenet.be

Write him a mail, he will send you the price list.

Sir, I didn't read what you will be hunting or what velocities your 650gr loads clock in your double.

That said, if I couldn't locate the 650gr Woodleighs you seek, sure wouldn't be afraid to order up a batch of the very heavy jacketed 650gr Hawk bullets, iirc they're available with 0.65" heavy jacket.

Also, I have a very few 750gr Woodleighs out in the shop, solids and maybe a soft or two, you can have them if you wish as my 577 is regulated with both 750gr Barnes', the TSX and banded flat nosed solids.

Good luck, sounds like a very cool old double rifle.

I called Hawk Bullets a couple weeks ago. They had no stock of anything .577 and said they wouldn’t be able to make any before I needed them.

Thanks for the offer of the 750 grainers, but the BPE shoots best with a 600 to 650 grain bullet. I wouldn’t want to shoot a monolithic in this old rifle, either. Woodleigh specifically designed their 650gr soft for the BPE. I should have bought a lot of them when they were available several years ago.

Still looking…

Well that sucks, but, something to think about and research if you choose, I'd be on the phone with CEB bullets first thing Monday morning, the 650gr CEB Safari flat nosed solid would do all you ever need done, Michael McCoury has done decades of exhaustive as well as expensive pressure testing research, the newer banded [read bore rider] mono solids from either CEB or North Fork are indeed kinder to old barrel steel.

I shoot the 450gr North Forks from a 1906 year model Holland double without concern, as well as the 210gr CEB solid in a 1900 year model Rodda 303 British double with fluid steel barrels, no damage, no harm, as well as very little fouling.

Pick your shots as not to kill or injure a second animal and You're Gold, have seen it first hand off the end of my own 577 double, "NOTHING" lives long with an inch and a half garden hose sized hole blasted clean through, nothing.

Again, good luck to you Sir, hope you get to carry that fine old rifle and put her to work.

I'll give them a call on Monday or drop a line via their websites. I don't think NF makes a .577... at least none are listed on their website.

Thanks for the advice and leads; hopefully, something will turn up..

At the speed your 577 BPE shoots (I am assuming that it is 1850-1900fps) don't discount using 650gr hard cast. i shoot alot of the hard cast in my 577 single.

Several folks have suggested a hard cast bullet. After I got this rifle, Cal Pappas, rest his soul, sold me some dies and handful of his lead bullets. They shot pretty well in this rifle. I don't have any molds and finding my old melt pot will be a challenge...

The CEB website show they have the 650gr flat nose solid in stock... trouble is they will only allow me to order 4 boxes of 50/ea. I doubt I'll ever shoot this rifle 200 times, but I really don't feel like dropping over $600 for 4 boxes I may never use but 50 of...

Well I would be willing to go half on the CEB's 650's?

I didn't need 4 boxes but two would work.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
