I was browsing collectors firearms in Houston today and there is a RSM in excellent shape on the rack if anyone needs one. I surprised myself on how I put it down and left the store. I think it may be priced a little high at 1995.00 but if ya need one guys this is a nice one! It has one ding on the bottom of the stock, other than that it looked great. She would be going home with me tonight if this .505 Gibbs wasn't sucking money out of my billfold . I'm at almost 2000.00 setting up to load for this thing(new press, CEB and Barnes bullets, just about every component is higher than giraffe giner! If one of ya but it let me know so I can at least be jealous of ya!
Good luck,
Cody

i would love a RSM in 458 L0tt, but $2k is too rich for my blood.

Me too Matt, but I bet there is some wiggle room!

Uhm....

Cody, isn't it Matt's job aroumd here to try and talk people into buying a Lott? ;)

Oh crap! Now there's two of them!

We are gonna call ourselves the persuaders! Lol

I think you are gonna find those RSMs keep going up and up, since Ruger discontinued them. $2000.00 really isn't that high for what you are getting, try building something like that for $2000.......

All that being said....Collectors ain't known for a "bargain seller", they do have stuff you just can't find everywhere.

It seems to me that once one crosses that 0.475" diameter, the cost of components and tools rises exponentially.

I don't covet your .505 Gibbs, but I sure wish I had one too.

Yeah Jtex, I normally just end up buying a couple books when I go in there. Not a deal to be found. It is a nice place to go look around.

I agree JTEX, I think they will continue to go up in price.
A few years from now $1995 may be a steal. Just from what I've seen over the past 6 months or so $1500-$1600 seems to be about what good condition guns are fetching. I gave $1800 for the new in box .416 Rigby I bought a few weeks ago. Not sure if that is a great deal or not, but I'm darn glad to have it and it truly is brand new in the box 100% condition never fired.

the Ruger RSM is nice but its not $2000 nice. you can get a new CZ 550 in 458 Lott and have it slicked up by a gunsmith for under $2000.

I am in the market for a .458" or .474" gun and a slicked up CZ 550 or a Ruger RSM may fill that roll. then again I may hold out for a Heym double in 450 NE 3.25" or 470 NE. I really should hold out for a double...

Idunno........... If you are just looking at function I'll agree with you.

But the CZs don't have the quarter rib, adding that will set you back a chunk. The wood on durn near every CZ I have seen is just..........utilitarian. And while I am not silly about the squarish parts of the RSM stock the stocks on the CZ magnums are like a club..... But the CZs ARE cheap, I will give you that.

Heck it's mostly personal. I have never heard of an RSM that didn't work from the factory.

the RSM may be a decent rifle but the question is whether a used one is worth $2000.

Not sure what the RSM looks like guys but I'm going to look it up. I just bought a Ruger Model 1 in 458 Lott and should have it to my FFL guy this week. Looking forward to taking it to the range!

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=471483601 Here ya go Charlie. It can be a little frustrating finding them but they show up semi regularly. This is the older model with the weird barrel band back in the fore stock. I have one like this I picked up for $950 but mine has a tiny cracks in the stock behind the tang (I took it apart and glued them).

You can't just search for RSM and find them. They say Ruger. Magnum of the left side of the receiver. They have that distinctive quarter rib, a barrel band but the newer one have it out on the barrel like it should be. On mine the serial number starts with 780, the newer ones start with 750 (typical Ruger helter skelter numbering).

As mentioned, the actions and overall quality is really good! You may have gotten lucky with your Guide Gun, but a lot of them have poor machining and don't feed well when new. Not so for the old RSM's! They were made when Ruger still took pride in workmanship. I admire the innovation and follow up service of Ruger, but the quality control sucks these days (maybe not as bad as CZ). Especially to someone used to the butter smooth Winchesters.

But I would rather have an RSM than a Winchester in a 458, if that tells you anything!

As far as I know, they came in 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, and 458 Lott. They are heavy and especially in the barrel (although I've not handled a 458). Mine is the 416 and it is almost 1.5 pounds heavier than my M70 416 Rem Mag. And I would say most of that is in the barrel, maybe a half pound in the action?

I do need one in 458 Lott, and then probably a 375 just to round it out! But my M70 375 is my hunting gun.

Thanks for the info Action Bob!

Worth is in the eye of the beholder, anythings "worth" is subjective....... Me? I wouldn't take $2,000.00 for any of mine. When I bought my first, a 375, I paid about $975.00 for it new....... Now they are going for $1,800.00 pretty regularly used. I think that's pretty good.

See what a CZ does in 12 years.........

.

JTEX, that is how I feel.. Except I only have one:( So far;)

I've missed out on one I found with an elephant stenciled on the floor plate... I need that whole collection!!! I think they are a better investment than a savings account!

Of course that relies on my kids not selling them to the first pawn shop they find.... That's why I need some grandkids to leave them to!

For now, I'm going to keep spending some more of my kids inheritance;)

My RSM is in .416 Rigby and I wouldn't take anything for it. Same for my #1 in .458 Win Mag. I might consider changing out the Browning Stainless A-Bolt in .375 H&H for a Winchester, but that is not a burning desire currently as it shoots well enough for me.
