Does anyone have any knowledge of or experience with this chambering?
My understanding is that it duplicates .416 Rigby ballistics albeit in a more compact 30/06 length action.

"A true short magnum, it uses the .458 Winchester Magnum case necked down to accept a .416-inch bullet. However, with modern propellants it's no great trick to get original .416 Rigby (and current .416 Remington) velocities out fo this case. In fact, there's an efficiency level here, and you can get good .416 velocities with relatively small powder charges."

Any Shot You Want

I own a 416 Taylor.. have shot it a lot.. and absolutely love it..

its possible to get very close to 416 Rigby ballistics.. but it wont quite get there if youre handloading for both..

the trade off when you get close to Rigby ballistics you are doing it at significantly higher pressures in the Taylor..

Ive found this isnt too much of an issue with the 98 Mauser action though..

400 @ 2300 isn’t a problem at all...

mdwest,
Would you care to share load data for your .416 Taylor? I’ve recently loaded some 400gr Barnes original bullets with 70.0gr of Reloader 15 for my Taylor which has a 22” barrel (I like longer barrels but it is what it is?). I was going to go to the range last weekend, but my wife had other plans. Definitely this weekend though! Thanks!

Im on the road this week.. when I get back to the house Ill shoot you a PM @CoElkHunter with a couple of different loads I've been successful with...

my "standard" go-to load is a 400gr Barnes TSX over 70 gr of IMR4064... I get about 3/4" groups @ 100 and about 2350 FPS out of a 24" bbl..

I recommend you google Pet Loads by Ken Waters.. you can find the section on 416 T online pretty easily.. there are numerous recommended loads for both 350 and 400 gr projectiles in there.. Pet Loads is where I got my personal "pet load" for the Taylor.. Ive been using IMR 4064 for my 308's and my 7x57 for years.. and always have a few cans on hand.. so I started with IMR 4064 to see what it would do... after trying a couple of different powders and probably 2 dozen different loads, I settled in on the load listed above.. its nearly perfect for my rifle..

My "north america" load is a 350gr Barnes TSX over 65gr of IMR 4064... I get similar accuracy as above and about 2325 FPS IIRC.. and its soft on the shoulder, producing roughly the same felt recoil as my 375 H&H shooting 300gr projectiles.... More than enough for anything that roams this side of the globe..

I have lots of .416T data that I would share, using AR2208(Varget) & AR2206H (H4895) for 300gn - 450gn bullets.

My favourite big game load is 410gn Woodleigh @ 2360fps. The 340gn Woodleigh @ 2550fps is a bomb on 300kg game or less!

The Woodliegh reloading manual has a very large section on 416 Taylor loads. My 416 Taylor loves 70grs of Reloader15 as well propelling a 400gr projectile. Fairly manageable recoil and very accurate as well.

This same load with 400gr Barnes originals (no cannelure) is what I’ve loaded and shot so far. Seems like a good moderate load with manageable recoil and good accuracy?

A grand caliber of yesteryear, put to sleep by the 416 Rem and now the 416 Ruger..A 400 gr. bullet at 2350 FPS without pushing the pressure string, built on a 06 length action. I shot one for a couple of years many moons ago, fine buffalo rifle and elephant ready.

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
