Looks like it is coming along. Have you considered installing barrel and headspacing it yourself? You seem like the kind of guy that enjoys projects and DIY. The biggest allure of the Savage actions are the easy and simple barrel installation and headspacing. Tons of guys do it themselves, in garages or kitchen tables. You could purchase the wrench and gauges cheaper than a gunsmith would probably charge. I would not mess with the barrel threads. I would instead take a thou or two off the inside of recoil lug. Easy to do with a dremel, or even with a socket wrapped in sandpaper.

Yeah you're right ... I do love a cool diy project like this, and I definitely considered attaching the barrel and doing the head spacing myself but in this case it's actually going to be nearly the same cost to have my gunsmith do it versus me having the buying and shipping costs of the Savage barrel nut wrench and the rental and shipping costs of the 416 Rem Mag head space gauges.

Another reason I also wanted to take the gun in to the gunsmith is because of the unusual circumstances of me having to use a 338 Lapua magazine for the 416 cartridge and there being some issues that I hope the gunsmith has a better insight on how to make the proper adjustments

Oh and YES YOU are CERTAINLY right! ......
It makes A LOT more sense to remove material from the inside diameter of the lug versus me thinking to remove the material from the peaks of the barrel's threads.
Thanks for the heads up .... opening up the bore of the lug is one job I can do here and likely save me a few bucks from having the gunsmith do it ;o)

the Accuracy International .300 Win Mag 3.850” COAL magazine likely will work better than the .338 Lapua Mag. It still may need adjustment, but it is closer to correctly fitting than the .338 Lapua magazine. I stuck five unloaded cases in and they were secure and feed fine by a thumb pushing them out, no odd movement at all.

.338 Lapua has a wider body than the .416 Rem, which is more similar to .300 Win Mag.

Thank you VERY MUCH for taking your time to check into that and sending me the pictures/information!

In the several months that I have been researching this project I've found VERY LITTLE and received VERY LITTLE in the way of an alternative style magazine for the 416 Rem Mag.

Was VERY nice seeing your pictures and especially a 416 Rem Mag in the magazine itself .... helped out tremendously!
You know as well as I do, those magazines are not inexpensive, and so they're not something I wanted having to buy a few different calibers of just to see which one fit the best

If my gunsmith ends up not having much luck with the 338 Lapua magazine, I'll start searching GunBr-ker and a few other places whereby hoping to find a used and/or inexpensive 300 WM (3.850) that you showed

my recommendation is to return or sell the .338 Lapua mag before altering it. It is too wide in the body, especially at the rear, and the rounds will move side to side under recoil. It should sell easy enough if unmolested and save the gunsmith time and thus you incurring fees. The only question about 3.850” mag is whether it will fit in the bottom metal you already have.

I know you already have a plan in the works but I just wanted to add that I installed a Remage barrel on an R700 action (30-06 to 6.5 CM) myself and that's sort of the allure of this barrel system. I purchased the wrench and headspace gauges figuring I would do more re-barrels like this in the future. Anyway, my point is it was very easy and I don't know if I can ever go back to setting headspace using a lathe ever again.
