Interestingly, for several centuries it also applied to the African elephant - at least those subspecies that could be captured and trained by the Carthaginians. Hannibal used them with limited effectiveness against Rome during the Punic Wars. In 218 he famously marched his war elephants over the Alps into Northern Italy.

Thats right, that was another breed of elephant that was somewhat more related to the Asian one and has since become extinct. They had nothing in common with our savanna elephant.

I am unaware of any evidence that they were related to the Indian sub-species. The general consensus seems to be that they were a northern subspecies of the forest elephant that subsequently became extinct. However, there is also evidence that the Carthaginians traded for "Nubian" elephants of which Hannibal's massive Sura may have been an example.

Up until 2017 when the government banned the practice, one could take a vacation in the Okavango from Abu Camp in Botswana and shoot pictures from the back of an African elephant.

The origin of the extinct North African Elephant breed is controversially discussed in specialist circles. Some try to assign him to a forest elephant sub-species, but others have a different opinion. The species seems to have also existed in the Middle East, the Egyptian pharaohs and later the Assyrian Kings hunted elephants in Syria, and which elephants the Parthians used is also not clear. We are in Persia not that far away from India.

How is this possible, the voted most dangerous of DG, Elephant with calf afoot being ridden, quieter then a farmed Friesian or Jersey Cow !

Thank you for your post on Hannibal’s Elephants, I was unaware they were of a African subspecies.

If you look hard at true Forest Elephants they certainly have a very different appearance to Bush/Plains Elephants & from what I know are even less tolerant of humans?

As far as I know caliber 450 Nitro Express, 470 Nitro Express, 475 N°2 Jeffery and in his early videos where he stops buffalo charges, he used a double rifle caliber 500 Nitro Express from John Wilkes. After that above all double rifles caliber 577 Nitro Express.

The point is that the issue isn't the rifle. The bulls charged after being shot with bigger rifles not just the .375. Good bullet and good shot placement are what works not the size of the rifle.
