I suspect it is possible, although perhaps not entirely advisable.
From a mathematical perspective, a lot of the old black powder stopping rifles were in that sort of power category. For instance, a 577BPE was launching a 570ish grain bullet at around 1725fps for around 3,770ftlb. It was adequate and even considered pretty good for the largest animals, up to and including elephant. In about 1875.
By comparison, a stout 10ga slug might launch a 750gr projectile (1.7oz) at around 1500fps. Around 3,750ftlb. Also adequate I suspect, at least by 1870s standards. Not so hot versus a modern .500NE though.
