    Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

I read through 7 pages, got the gist of the thread and then skipped to the end. I used to own a Rolex I bought new around 1992. I enjoyed wearing it for about 15 years and then I sold it. I now own 5 Omegas and a Breitling. I wouldn't mind owning another Rolex but the quality of their watches in...

    Cooper Arms Model 52 Magazine

Cooper rifles have to have the magazines tuned to each individual rifle. When I wanted to buy extra magazines for my 9.3x62 & 300H&H I had to send the rifles back to the factory to have that done. IIRC it was about $90 @ magazine plus tax & shipping.

to thread, or not to thread

Big/medium bore rifles have their own unique desirability. The report and recoil are integral to the experience. I understand why some folks want to suppress smaller hot magnums but anything .375 and up should be enjoyed as they are.

You guys with Ruger Africans in .275 Rigby take notice of this!!

I had Ruger Africans in 275 Rigby, 6.5x55 Swede and 9.3x62. I sold all of them to different members here on AH. Glad I got to own them and I'm glad they were sold to people that would really appreciate them. I don't spend any time worrying about the value of guns I used to own. I've never...

Ruger Hawkeye African .375 Ruger as Dangerous Game rifle?

Ruger bolt actions are excellent rifles that are no more or less prone to problems than any other rifle. I've owned dozens of them and never had a functioning problem at all. Ever. 223 to 375H&H. You hear the same complaint about CZ too and while I haven't owned dozens of them the dozen or so I...

    6.5x55 sweed

I've had a couple and I'm a big fan but I no longer own one. The 6.5x55 was a casualty of me wanting to cut back to only a few calibers. It was one of the last to go.

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

I too have owned or still own all four and in my experience the Kimber was the least desirable of the bunch. In fact the Kimber is the only one I don't still own because of how unreliable it was.

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

CZ, Winchester & Ruger are a no go but a Kimber is okay? I get wanting a 'nice' rifle. I own a couple myself but there's absolutely nothing wrong with a CZ, Winchester or Ruger big game rifle.

    Other H&H Magnum Calibers

There's a reason the 300 and 375 are by far the most popular H&H calibers. I own both. I was mildly interested in 400H&H but after a lot of research I decided it was just too much of an outlier. I went with 404J instead. No regrets.

Winchester Model 70... new or pre-64?

Pre-64 Model 70's don't live up to the hype. They're good rifles but they aren't the super rifle most people would have you believe. The main thing they have going for them is nostalgia. That's not a bad thing. Buy one with confidence but I sure as heck wouldn't pass up on a modern M70 either.

    Peter Capstick...who knows the truth?

@Hunter-Habib, you are a very respected member of this community and a very experienced PH. Count me as one of your fans. However, I find your nitpicking a minor inconsistency about what shotgun PHC used slightly off-putting. I'm not sure why you're so insistent about it. It's a meaningless...

    300 H&H Improved

Blasphemy! Leave it alone! There's nothing you can do to 300H&H that will make it better than it already is. It doesn't need to be faster. Go get some new fangled .30 caliber whizbang if speed is your thing. Among its other attributes the 300H&H feeds like butter with its gently sloped...

    Old bullets = "fragile" ?

All the physics/chemical concerns noted above may be true but I suspect it might have something to do with a lot of shooter's obsession with speed. Those older bullets were designed to work at more reasonable velocities. Push them too hard and you get some of the issues the OP mentioned.

Questions about the African Carry and Others

Just because someone is fanatical about safety doesn't mean they're more safe than others. An obsessive adherence to a set of rules doesn't make you more safe it just makes you more obsessive. Common sense should be the order of the day. I frankly don't care how someone else carries as long as...

Thoughts on the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44 Scope?

I briefly had a VX5-HD but sold it before ever using it. I forget the exact model but it was on the low power small objective lens end of the VX5-HD model lineup. On paper the specs looked good. I thought I'd be okay with the 30mm tube but after loosely mounting it on a rifle IMO it looked...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

I forgot to add that I used to own an M77 375Ruger. All stainless and laminate stock. Very suitable for hunting anywhere. I still own a CZ 550 375H&H. It started life in blue and walnut. Since I preferred it overall to the Ruger (except for the caliber I considered them equals) I added a B&C...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

Ballistics are so similar it's a coin toss and both are excellent rifles. Action length is the only real reason 375Ruger exists. They wanted to cram 375H&H performance into a regular action. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The downside is in order to achieve similar...

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

As a few other posters have mentioned I'm headed the other direction. Less is more. I've owned many calibers and still have plenty but I'm thinning the herd. I will keep a few I like even though I don't have a specific need for them but I'm seriously moving towards 3-4 primary calibers.

    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

On page 2 I criticized her for wanting kudos for making a lucky shot. I stand by that comment but let me expand a little bit. My contempt (that's the correct word) for that shot is twofold. First, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she's a competent long range SHOOTER. The problem...

why do people not use premium bullets?

If you were to trim down your dangerous game rifle collection, which cartridge/rifle would you let go and why?

I would keep my 375H&H. Of the handful of DG caliber rifles I have it's the only one suitable for hunting in all weather and all conditions. CZ550, B&C stock, AHR upgrades.

Unless I misunderstood the OP it's not a 'conversion'. He didn't buy an off the shelf 550 and then have AHR do some upgrades. Shooting a 1" group on a range doesn't mean much IMO. I get it and tend to agree but, speaking for myself, I've experienced a lot of rifles and many different calibers.
