Uneventful boarder crossing from Botswana back into South Africa and an easy ride back to Boseveld Jacobs Lodge in Vaalwater…
Carling Black Label for the win! I sure wish I could get some of that here in Texas!

Henk and I had an evening stalk looking for a Steenbok. I have one from my first trip in 2007, but the cape slipped and I only have the Skull.

This is a nice property (3,000 Plus Acres) in the Waterberg and only across the road from main camp. Lot of water here including a marsh area and a big, beautiful, pond full of lily pads and 1 small crock I’m scheduled to dispatch in the coming days.

We didn’t see one, but had a nice walk…

Friday 16th. I’m having a hard time approaching sharing this; probably because I’m superstitious (fishermen understand) and also because I didn’t want this Safari to be derailed by this development.

I’ll first say, I believe I prepared well for this Safari knowing I would be in 3 countries and in and out of South Africa 3 times.

I read up on viruses, diseases, and illnesses, met and consulted with two doctors, and consulted with my outfitters who I will hunt with. I likely got more vaccines than were necessary to include Typhoid, Hepatitis A&B, as well as confirmed that I was current on everything else. I started Malarone prior to leaving for Mozambique.

I came up with a preventative plan and an emergency plan! Got a Global Rescue plan, an additional medical policy, as well as cancellation/trip insurance policy. I even a got an additional rifle insurance policy for my rifles.

My preventative and back up was focused on the first leg Moz.
Meds:
Malarone
Ciprofloxacin
Azithromycin
Prednisone
Albuterol Inhaler

At this point I’ll mention that I’ve had Asthma since I was a child. I always have inhalers and travel with prednisone. I generally don’t have Asthma problems, but wanted to be prepared. I’ve never had to use prednisone while traveling.

I’ve now been sick with a respiratory problem since October 1st. It went from a sinus infection, to a respiratory infection, and now bronchitis. I hunted through it by using Nasal spray, antihistamines with decongestants, my inhaler, and as much hydration as possible.

The rain delay had us at a hotel in Beira the very first leg of the Africa trip instead of flying directly to camp. The hotel put me on the second floor. I noticed after we checked in the strong smell of what could have been incense, but it wasn’t, it was a mosquito coil burning to control mosquitos. I went to bed thinking it was annoying because I’m sensitive to any kind of smoke, but figured it’s one night and I’ll be done with it. I woke up at 2:00am sneezing, coughing, wheezing, and with a sore throat. I took an allergy tablet and took a few puffs on my inhaler and finally got back to sleep. Then I woke up with my throat very sore, still coughing, and with a runny nose.

As soon as I see Henk in the morning, he says what’s wrong? I tell him that damn insense set me off. He said that’s a mosquito coil! It was then I realized why it was so bad! And it was still burning. I said I can’t stay here. Luckily we flew out that afternoon and was in camp before dinner.

Too late, damage was done. I was managing a sinus infection and asthma complications while hunting in challenging conditions as well as a change in environmental conditions. Even though it was hot and humid, you see ash and particles in the air from the daily management burning they were doing. Plus they were constantly burning wood to heat water in the camp. That’s a significant operation that supplies camp hot water and it was right behind my Chalet. Windows are screened and always open. Just making me worse. Every night I’m coughing up lung congestion mucus. I know what this is, but I’m not going to complain and certainly not going to let it impact my Safari. If it got worse I would go to the Prednisone.

I made it through it. With us getting in from hunting at 9:30pm, bed at 10:30, (awake coughing 2 hours) and back up at 5:00am it was taking its toll. I managed. Henk notices I’m using my inhaler more frequently and coughing, but I don’t complain and dismiss his concern. We make it through and on to Botswana.

I’m getting worse in Botswana. Dryer weather, but no change in my 2 hour night coughing and congestion, but now phlegm is thick green and I know where this is going. I’m even more run down and tired because we’re getting to bed late and getting up at 2:30am…I don’t complain and get my Elephant using the same protocol. Just not prednisone.

I don’t write about it because family and friends are reading my report to follow my progress and I don’t want them to worry.

Back to South Africa. Yesterday I was having a hard time breathing and feeling exhausted. I told Henk that I may have to make plans to leave early because I’m certain I have infection, bacterial or viral, and it’s bad.

I pack, reach out to my Doctor in the states, notify my Arch Roam Right who handles the medical insurance and cancellation policy, they connect me to On Call International, Henk assures me he has a great doctor within 40 minute drive, I contact my Brother in New York, and update my girlfriend without trying to worry her, loop in Debbie at Gracey to make aware for support and flight changes, and start organizing and packing.

My doctor’s office works off a messaging system but I can’t log on due to being out of the country. I finally get a message, second hand from the doctor. Go ahead and start the prednisone, but I can’t advise further without seeing you to determine bacterial or viral…

I get on the phone with On Call International and set up a case and get a case number. I tell them I have a local clinic and doctor I intend to see and they confirm process and protocol.

Henk sends the doctor a WhatsApp message and ensures me this doctor is good.

I don’t take anything, use my inhaler, and don’t take prednisone because I don’t know what I actually have and don’t want to worsen the symptoms. It was a rough night with about 4 hours of disruptive sleep and nightmares…

More to come…

So sorry to hear you are feeling sick. I hope Henk's DR can get you on the path to recovery.

Hope is nothing serious, and have it checked out.

Good luck with the health hope it is all resolvable.

Sat 16th - I’m not dead: Still in South Africa.

Got up early Friday 15th.

Henk, checked on me early and told me the Doctor responded at 1:30am and said be in his office at 9:00am. At this point I’m coughing up even more lung, blowing out more infected sinus junk, headache, 3 hours sleep, tired, and trying to figure out how well I need to be to travel home. I use my inhaler and have a light breakfast.

Henk let me know this Doctor was very good and very capable at a nice clinic. We didn’t talk much on the way in. I had no idea what to really expect.

I was relieved not to have to go to a Hospital or clinic in Moz or Bots. After spending the last few days in Botswana and seeing the conditions that many bush suspsistence farmers live in and actually have nothing, It makes one appreciate how blessed we are to have access to great medical care. That was part of the other reason I didn’t want to post about not feeling well; I generally feel that it’s better to practice grace. "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet”.

I’ll remind everyone that this report is to provide as much first hand information as possible, through experience, to those whom may benefit. For me the hunting is a privilege, but part of a greater process.

It’s interesting to consider that we are in a third world country in South Africa with first world privileges. That said, I wandering what this clinic will be like, how experienced the doctor may be, if they will have the medication I need, how challenging will it be to get, and how much will It cost.

Big surprise. The clinic was modern with pleasant staff. Not busy, but appointments were starting to show up. The doctors office is in the clinic, but a private practice. Doctor Gerhard Kritzinger greets me in his office for a sit down interview and first thing he does is ensure me he is not a bush doctor :ROFLMAO: and can provide the level of care to at a minimum get me fit for travel! I received a sit down brief review of my health history, including my prescriptions. I got a thorough examination. He tested everything he could to make a prognosis, we discussed options, and he identified that I had wheezing and congestion complicating my asthma symptoms, sinus and respiratory infections, and bronchitis. There was no guessing and he could have done more tests if I add the luxury of more time for tests results to comeback that would result in a different treatment plan. So we agreed the time frame was not reasonable and I need a plan to become more comfortable and start treating what he understood was the problem.

This type of visit was very comprehensive and more than I expected. I received several prescriptions that would be considerate of the fact that already started Malarone and had a Z pack, as well as prednisone. Top tier service from an exceptional experienced doctor.

I told Dr. Kritzinger that with all due respect, if I needed long term care, it would be better for me to have it at home with the support of my family and use of facilities that are familiar to me and doctors that understand my medical history and that my private health insurance would cover! I told him I only wish I could bring him with me! Such a humble, yet experienced doctor with the most pleasant disposition and bedside manner. I received about 10 new prescriptions to use with prednisone and the Azithromycin. Some were over the counter. Doctor visit, exam, tests, prescriptions was $92! Follow up visit Monday.

I later learned from Henk that Dr. Kritzinger was a former general surgeon who lost vision in one eye and instead of retiring, started his own practice to care for people. I believe he is in his mid 70’s. You wouldn’t know it to look at him or talk to him…

The pharmacy was friendly, fast, and the pharmacist was experienced and a pleasure to deal with. Total cost of prescriptions $65.

Good thing I was with an outfitter that was prepared and willing to jump into action. I was likely heading for a hospital stay.

Feeling better today after a good night sleep. No alcohol, no coffee, no unnecessary sugar and rest. The goal is to get fit to travel and get home, but not travel early in a way that can exacerbate my condition. So I need to let this medication work and do something I’m not good at; relax.

If you are ever in the Waterberg Biosphere area hunting, or an area near Lephalale in Limpopo and need a great doctor, Doctor Gerhard Kritzinger: https://slimdoc.co.za/ will provide you great care!

I’m still tired, medication is making me dopey, but it could be worse. I’m hopeful…

I had a great Honor today. I spent some quality time with Bosveld Jacobs, Author of Soul of the Leopard. We talked about his start in Leopard hunting, his time as a professor, his transition out of academia into farming, ranching, and how the hunting industry transformed the Waterberg Biosphere and that part of Limpopo into the amazing hunting area it is today.

Yesterday afternoon we stopped at Bull’s Eye Taxidermy to go over plans for my Elephant, Buffalo, and small animals.

IMG_7083.jpeg

I met with Pedri the in house leather smith, looked at designs, and went over details that I have in mind for the hides.

Since I’m convalescing, I took the time to do little shopping and support the local economy.

IMG_7090.jpeg

Picked up this very nice carved Leadwood Elephant and a few warthog tusk bottle openers.

A few caps from the Vaalwater Hotel’s Bush Baboon curio shop….

I like the buffalo pedestal, if I ever mount another it will be a pedestal with hopefully a blue or red duiker incorporated into the base.
Glad you feel well enough to get out and about a bit.

Glad you got to the doc. Asthma etal is no fun. Glad you are on the mend.

Sun 18th - Morning in South Africa

Feeling well enough to sit in a blind for Baboons. We dropped some peaches from a local farm yesterday in a grazing pasture.

Luckily for this 53” Kudu I already 2, one being bigger than this one!

It’s tough to be idle and not hunt the way we intended. That said, I’m definitely grateful I got the care I needed to be fit for travel home.

I have another doctor’s visit (tomorrow) Monday. I’m making arrangements to fly out Tuesday if possible, instead of Friday.

Awesome, glad you are feeling better. I love hunting Kudu, and I don't know if I would have had the will power to pass on that one. :ROFLMAO:

Monday 19th:

Final doctor appointment to get cleared “Fit to Fly”. Another comprehensive exam to include chest and sinus X-Rays. No pneumonia, so that’s good.

Flying out tomorrow afternoon. It’s been a great Safari and time here. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to hunt everything I planned on for the final leg here in South Africa. Couple permits went unfilled, but there are worse things.

Ending 3 days early, I’m just feeling run down and generally tired. Likely all the medication to get bronchitis, asthma, sinus and lung infections under control.

Hanging out inside, instead outside by the open pit fire is a bummer.

Everyone here at Bosveld Jacobs Safaris have been helpful and supportive. I couldn’t ask for more than that!

Glad to hear you are feeling better! Safe travels back home. All in all great safari and thanks for taking us along. (y)
