The species to be hunted have been decided. The area best suited for success has been identified. The PH to be trusted with the work has been interviewed and questioned ad nauseam on everything from his expertise on the area, to what I can expect, to the hospitality and comfort and extra activities my wife will be able to enjoy.
I look at my watch. What time is it in Tete now? As though somehow by knowing the local time I can feel a connection to a place I’ve never been to before.
How is it possible that this land we generally call “Africa” to have such a profound pull on my soul? It is as if I discovered a part of myself that was incomplete. Or, maybe, it’s just I’ve changed.
I’ve felt this before. Alaska had the same affect on me 20 years ago. I’m trying (in vain) to complete and close a very emotional chapter in my life and hunting career with a report to you all. I write. I delete. I write. I stop. It’s true “Nothing that ends ever ends well. Otherwise, it’d never end.”
So, I sit here, looking out the window on a beautiful sunny day across the prairie and open sections of remnant stubble left behind from harvest and imagine the open plains of savanna of my new paradise. It is truly unfair the ineffable power that Africa has over me.
My watch has become the bane of my existence. 18:35 there now.
