Magna-Porting a Double Rifle?

Before everyone goes bananas in the comments I’m not considering doing this!

I’m just curious if it’s a thing, and if not why it isn’t if it works on a regular rifle or pistol?

Porting has a reputation for utterly destroying the value of a fine arm. Doing so to a double rifle would easily remove $10k from the resale value, so most people wouldn't do it just for that reason alone.

On a technical level, the regulation comes into play in large part within the last 3" of the barrel via the regulating wedge. It would really alter regulation a LOT. Lastly, you cannot symetrically port a double barrel rifle because of the ribs. So you're creating asymetric recoil and regulation issues.

The master has spoken and I bow my head.
I hadn't considered the rib asymmetry, that alone kills the idea. Thanks for the explanation, especially the point about regulation in the last 3 inches.

I would assume if it were done a double rifle maker would have the Mag-na-porting done to the barrels before regulation. Perhaps Heym would do this if the customer desired?

I had a Heym 500NE that was ported. It was my first double and did not know about the porting till I received it. If I am not mistaking I sold to another forum member here.

I shot a bunch of wild pigs and worked just fine. Unfortunately never got a chance to take it to Africa. I would definitely never get a double ported my self or any other gun.

If you directing this to me, much of this discussion has been tongue in cheek, nobody is going to be Mag-na-porting their DR. The OP was just asking.

My personal interactions with men in my age bracket from both SA and former Rhodesia have always been very positive because we share similar military/LE backgrounds and thinking but I guess there are exceptions.
Firing a 90mm recoilless gives a good understanding of what can be achieved by controlling the path of rapidly expanding gases.

NO!

A quality DR has been regulated at the manufacturer with specific factory loaded ammunition.

If you start doing stuff to the rifle, you will quickly devalue it's worth.

I use a Heym.

If I had to buy one that had been Magna-Ported, I would not not pay 50% of the original value.

The owner of this Krieghoff said the original owner told him this DR came from the factory ported. What do you think? Could it have been?
