Oh boy, did I screw up!
I thought purchasing, installing and operating the off-grid solar before 12/31/2025 would enable me to take the 30% tax credit for 2025.
I was busting my hump to get to that point, since the credit was going away after Jan 1. I knew the construction on the dwelling would not be finished or even really livable until later, but my goal was to be making current by the end of last year.
Turns out you also had to live in the place by 12/31/2025, to take the credit!
We did not move to the off-grid retirement property until April 2026, and we are still not actually in the house.
So the $12,000 credit against my 2025 tax paid? Gone. Can't claim it.
If I was still working, not such a big deal. But for a retired piker who is also getting ready to take delivery of a 5-figure Bradshaw...and finish said construction project...let's just say my wife thinks I need to make a plan!
I have saved a lot of money over the years doing things myself. This is one of those where my inexperience cost me!
I will be dropping a Rigby into the classifieds to get myself out of the dog house!
