MOZAMBIQUE: Buffalo & Crocodile With CMSafaris

What a great report on an epic hunt! Well done in all respects!

Alan is a great guy and a consummate PH. @Jeff505 hunted with him and I hunted with Dean Kendall in Dande a few years ago. Great times were had!

Your experience with a malfunctioning rifle only reinforces my decision to hunt with my own guns. By the time I take a gun to Africa, I’ve fired it dozens or hundreds of times. (Only dozens of times for my 458 Lott, ‘cause, damn!) By then, I am as sure as I can be that the gun feeds, fires and ejects every time. All’s well that ends well and your buffalo is magnificent.

Great story....interesting to see the Ph with the big pipe wearing sandals..:)

Well done sir, enjoyed the report !!

Waidmannsheil! Great report.

Congrats on the success of your hunt. What a lovely Buff. Certainly you are in great hands hunting with Alan, Maplan and Martin. I have hunted several times with those very guys in Zim. Was Dubeh ( spelling ? ) not also there ?

What a wonderful hunt! Having rifle issues while DG hunting makes it for an interesting/pucker factor moment. Thank you for taking us along. Is there more?

I certainly agree on Alan's credentials as a PH and all around great guy! I spent months training and fine tuning and practising with my own Sako Kodiak .375, it was flawless. I had all the permits and permissions and payments in place with governments and airlines to bring it along, but when the USA/Iran war broke out my Qatar flights through Doha were cancelled and I didn't have time to arrange for a rifle on alternate airlines. Thinking more about the problems I had with the rifle, I believe it was just a dirty or corroded chamber and action that caused the problems. I had cycled 4 rounds through the action to verify feeding and ejection the 1st day, but three days of hunting in sandy / gritty conditions may have caused problems. The hand loaded ammo may have contributed to the ejection issues but that's speculation. I believe the camp did try to supply good equipment, it was just an unfortunate circumstance. In such a remote location some things don't go according to plan, it's the nature of adventures.
That's my whole report! Waidmannsdank! I wish the hunt was still going on too!

Didn't you have rifle issues on your Elephant hunt too?

Yes, minor issues. That rifle ( Win. M70 .416) would accept two cartridges in the magazine but was not reliable with three down. Small details matter!

Thanks for sharing your experience - interesting and exciting report.

All issues aside - you ended up with one of the nicer buffalo that I've seen on this forum for quite awhile. Looks like he's got it all - huge boss, deep curl, lotsa character. I can only hope that I stumble onto his twin brother some day ... Superb trophy, Congrats

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
