Close friends of mine and my wife (another husband/wife couple) have booked to go on safari in Moz together with my DG PH Adrian Salter. We’re going to Panyame.


He’s going on his first true wilderness hunt with me in a couple days. Like me, he is farm country/blue collar. Like me he has built himself up from nothing. Neither of us, by anyone’s standards would call us wealthy.

He told me, today, as he’s driving down to meet me for our drive north to Alaska, that he’s been taking flack from his routine hunting camp about going to Alaska with me and now, especially, since he told folks (happy and excited!) to be going to wild Africa.

“Must be nice.”

I told him, as I’ll tell any reader of my words on this post; “That’s what cowards say,Jason.”

“Must be nice…” F-you.

Bring a man down and try and guilt him. You can’t just be happy for someone? Pathetic.

I’m done. Just had to vent.
 
Yea, I know @LivingTheDream but it’s not me. It’s a buddy and my answer is F-you, (which is yours too, but nicer, I admit.) . He’ll figure it out. Or just not show up to the fire call… People should really consider who they choose to insult.
 
I saw this title and it really hit a nerve. I’ve heard that statement too many times. I’ve disassociated myself from many of the people that use that line now, but I think it must be nice to have every weekend off and never work out of state.

I absolutely hate when people say that, although I have admittedly used the phrase myself. The difference is I would never say to someone’s face (I don’t want them to misconstrue it as negative), I mean it only in a positive way, must be nice and I always finish it with “Very good for them!” or “I’m very glad they’re able to do that!”

Must be nice? Actually pretty easy, work forty and live on thirty-two.
 
I am with @LivingTheDream, I’ve heard it more times than I can count. If it’s from somebody who actually hunts my answer is “It is, let me know when you’re ready to go and I’ll help you make a plan.”

If it’s from a non-hunter, my answer is “ it sure is” and I leave it at that. I know what I do to make my hunts happen and as long as my family is ok with it, I really am not concerned with what anybody else thinks or says. No need to waste any emotional energy on somebody I wouldn’t ask for advice and anybody I think enough of to ask for their advice on anything, wouldn’t say those kind of things.
 
(Breathing exercises) I have heard this as well. I've always been the cordial chuckle guy and moved one. The post above really stuck a fork in my sciatica, though. "Nice" had nothing to do with what you and I had to do to get "wherever" or "whatever" they are blabbing about. I would like all of us to be able to flash a spreadsheet up on the board (so they might understand it) as to what it's like seeing the guard at the gate, or the receptionist at the front desk more than your spouse everyday is like. "Must be nice" rolling out of a hotel at 4:00 A.M. to go walk on cement for 12 hours in either sweltering hot or bone numbing cold, eh? I know more than a couple of you at least by electronic conversation, if not face to face. I'll say this, those of you who hunt the most, work the hardest. It amazes me that you guys do what you do. So, the next time someone gives you that line, please tell them from Hedge, "It was hell getting here, but it is nice now."
 
I had a relative say that to me once….then I explained his trip to Disney cost more than my last safari.

Some hunting folks still dont realize that hunting in Africa and Europe is often less expensive than an elk hunt out west. Go with an “own use” or non trophy hunt and it’s even better. And no drawing a tag.

I spent many years quietly declining restaurant trips with family during the week to make an extra mortgage payment. Always drove older cars. Amazingly....all debt free by 60 and ready to spend my one childs inheritance.

I have a question due to the ambiguity of the English language…do you mean to say that you have one child, or that you plan to spend the inheritance of one specific child. I think the latter is way funnier.
 
Easy to reply with “work harder”, “make better choices”, or “get a dad with money.” I also like “it was no big deal deal, just had the wife pick up a couple weekend shifts at the club.”
 
I imagine this will strike a nerve with a lot of people on this forum. I think anyone who has gone on more than one "dream hunt" and especially anyone who has had a moderate amount of success hunting hears this a lot.

Hunting, and more so, being successful at hunting brings out a lot of jealousy in others. It's amazing what a set of horns or antlers can do to people.

As others have said, usually the same people saying it don't see their own spending habits on weekends at the bar, rounds of golf, smoking, drinking, family trips, new trucks, etc as an issue. But when you have a big trip that makes them jealous, it takes the battery out of their brain and puts it into their mouth.

This kind of jealousy has really changed a lot of relationships for me. It's not fun to hang out with someone who you can clearly see is unhappy with your success and only happy when you tell them something went wrong on a trip.
 
@Tdsmith517 That is one and the same for me. Wife only ever had one good egg. I plan to spend that specific childs $$. Fortunately she is successful and much more financially secure than I was at her age. Don't think she will need my leftovers. Single too if anybody has an eligible bachelor son I could hunt with !!!
