In my case, it was because I already had a ,416 Rigby
 
With Rigby you can get lucky in terms of their stock grades. My BGR PH model in their grade 2 looks much better than some HS in grade 5. And I have seen some HS in grade 5 which I would rank much higher which I have found grading stocks is truly an art not a scuence
 
Honestly, guys. I just passed along the word because of the name "Rigby" and my knowing my brethrens' love of the 404. I have no clue if that is a good gun deal, but I know you do.

Because several members here i believe have purchased them and 15k is a pretty solid price on them.

I work a lot with sawmills that make the gunstocks. Grading is an art, but a given blank can make a grade 2 or a grade 5 stock, depending a little on luck, and the stock maker themself. Sometimes 50-70% of the blank is grade 2, and only some has high figure, but the stock maker angles their template to get the butt area 90% figure by the time it’s actually milled to size making the final product a higher grade than the blank was since most of the plain parts were cut off.

Here’s an English walnut blank I had that would be rated as grade 1 or 2. The left half is quite bland but the right half once finished, especially the top section, could turn out really special, especially if it was made into a shotgun butt with the orientation such that the buttpad is at the top right. With an alkanet oil finish before oil to bring out the contrast, it would punch well above its weight for its low grade. I’m sure the rigby guys also do what they can to make the stocks of a given grade as pretty as it’s able to get.
 
Friendly advice for folks who buy guns from cabelas
You can stack up to 10gift cards into a purchase. Via Cardcash you can buy electronic gift cards at a discount…higher $ gift cards are generally 5% off sometimes I’ve seen 10-12%. At the worst you can pretty much always buy plenty of $500 gift cards at 5% off (ie saves you $250 on first $5k spent)
Cardcash emails you the gift cards a couple min after purchase.
I’ve done this lots of times and the only issue is sometimes you buy a dud (gift card with $0)…refunds are quick and easy within 45 days.

If you were to buy the Rigby from the UK exactly like they are available at Cabellas by the time it got to your US FFL with all taxes and tariffs it would cost you about $18,000. I negotiated one of the Cabellas down to a flat $15,000 and only paid taxes given the transfer from their TX location to my GA location where I picked it up cost me zero extra.
 
Got a good deal on a Steyr Zephyr II full wood stock in .22LR this week.

For the Aussies here, Cleavers and some other LGSs currently have them for under AUD1k.

Seems to do OK with CCI Standard. Interestingly, mine didn't like RWS Match.

BTW - a correction to my post above - it was Geco Match that I did not get good grouos with, not RWS.

I am surprised that the entry level wood on a big game is 2, but on a Highland Stalker it is a 5.
 
I get that but if I had an Big Game in an African DG Caliber I would hunt with it maybe once every 2 or 3 years. A highland Stalker would be my go to deer rifle, hog rifle etc. I would hunt with it several times every year. It would be way more of a "working" rifle. Maybe that just means I don't go to Africa often enough!
