The sable bull at the top was an animal I hunted for 3 years. I like unusual mounts. He was an old warrior and deserved a clean end rather than letting the hyena's and jackels have him.

That is an awesome sable. I love hunting unique and old animals.

I have only taken a whitetail doe with my 358, so I’m glad to see you using one in Africa. What bullets were you using?

Thanks much sir. I've used Barnes TSX's ( they compress the powder more than I care for but no pressure problems ) and Woodleigh Weldcore's RN @225grn. Outstanding performance.

Howdy Jack. Cases are Star Line. Bullet was the Woodleigh Weldcore RN 225grn. I used W748 powder ( I won't list the charge weight for liability reasons ) with the overall length at 2.80in. Chronographs at 2520fps in my 22in barrel with no pressure signs. 225grn Barnes TSX's use the same load but, due to the longer length really compress the powder but again no pressure signs. If you wish, send a personal message and I'll give you the powder charge but work up to it as it may not be safe in your rifle.

Thanks. I was mainly curious as to your bullet choice. My .358 is the .350 Rem Mag.

Very good indeed. The 350 Rem Mag is a great round. At the time I couldn't get Swift A-Frames (still can't) so good friend Bob 35 Whelen got those Woodleighs for me. They hold together and penetrate like crazy. Didn't recover a single bullet even after going through both shoulders at 170 yards on the Sable. North Fork bullets are high on my list also.

I'am very impressed with your sable !

I'am not a long range shooter and very fond of the 358 Winchester, have a Browning BLR and a Ruger 77. Both has been a one and done rifles. Always used Hornady 200 gr. SP until 2020 was low on bullets so ordered some more. They ended up not being the same as my old stock. Shot a nice 270 lb. bear only thing the bullet never exited broke one rib only one lung and the bullet was like a varmint bullet all pieces, heaviest piece was 70 gr. Bear only went 40 yards. Never had what was a good bullet do that. Shot a deer later that year did the same thing never exited distroyed the lungs no exit.
I switched to Cutting Edge Bullets 160 gr. ER Raptor evry animal drop at the shot. Base always exits lung are jello.

For lighter game I've been using North Fork 200grn semi- Spitzer's. Kills like a bolt of lightening and will shoot lengthwise through a 150lbs deer. Have yet to recover a bullet.

I don't have a .358 Win - a closet full of Whelen's. Yah us .35 guys struggle a bit with bullet selection and availability. We've found that the 225 Accubond matches up really well with the velocities of the Whelen ( thinking the .358 being very close). Readily available and great performance - If I was shooting a .358 Win, probably the first bullet I'd try.

Hello Nosler. Compared to factory loads (not handholds ) I can get within 100fps of factory 35 Whelen loads. I personally don't care for the Accubond as I've seen them fail on numerous occasions. Just my take. But use what works for you. I prefer North Fork PP and Woodleigh Weldcore bullets. bullet selection has gotten better and there seems a revival in 35 caliber rifles.

Now I'm curious - what kinda game at what ranges, with your .358, did you have these "bullet failures". Always trying to learn something ...
Well, in the 358, none personally as I don't use them in that caliber. I tried them in my 9.3X62 on a whitetail at 115yrds and it blew up like a varmint bullet. I've taken several clients to Namibia who were all shooting magnums and using Accubonds. At ranges below 150 yards they all came apart and we chased animals for several days to finish them. At 200 or better they seemed to hold together better. It's an accurate bullet and at longer ranges they seem ok once the velocities drop off but I prefer a bullet that will penetrate and break heavy bone and stay together.

If you haven’t checked out Hawk Bullets yet, I can tell you they offer a pretty wide selection of 35-cal/.358” slugs as well as jacket-thickness choices.

Howdy Jack. As a matter of fact I have tried Hawk bullets. Have always been interested in the Hawk cartridges. I ordered a box of their 358 diameter 225grn RN with the heavy jacket for load development. Sadly with every powder I tried, including my go to W748, could not get them to shoot less than 2.5in groups. My barrel just didn't like them. With North Fork or Woodleigh 225grn bullets I get 5/8th to 3/4in groups. Been doing this reloading thing more years than I care to think about. Really disappointed as I had high hopes for the Hawk bullets.

Sorry to hear that, but good to know.

In my .350 Mag Rem M660, I’ve been trying to replicate an old Ken Waters 300grn load with Hawk’s RT bullets that have a JT of of .035. In his Pet Loads chapter on my cartridge, Waters used Barnes’ 300grn/.358” RNSP @ 2250fps to develop a DG load, but sadly Barnes long ago discontinued those bullets.

Hawk was the only bullet-maker I’ve found that offers a 300grn/.358” bullet (and in different JTs too). Maybe somebody else does that I’ve overlooked.

I’ve also have an order into Hawk for the same 300grn slugs with a .050 JT, just to test and see if there’s any accuracy difference.

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
