I travel all the time. Early in our relationship my wife and I agreed airport pickups and drop offs are not a thing for us.
I would hate to make her fight traffic out to Dulles and back just to save a few bucks.

Turkish Air also has a deal for international connecting flights through Istanbul, where you get a hotel room for an overnight stay as part of b-class ticket.
Turkish has direct flights to Istanbul from many major US cities. B-class on the 787 planes is much nicer than the older 777s. Turkish uses both aircraft, so factor that in.

Yeah war going on in Iran. That is the number one reason I would fly Delta, and drop down to a lower class of seat.
That is why Emirates is cheaper right now, they know that their terminal and airport might get destroyed by an Iranian missile.

Long as it’s legal where you’re going and where you’re coming from your fine. You also have federal document with the suppressor giving you permission to temporarily export and reimport it.

My 2 cents:
(1) United is a horrible airline not a chance I would take that flight. (2) Delta, direct is always best, but not in this case. Going anywhere other than JNB requires an overnight in Jo'berg and you are paying a large premium for the privilege of the direct flight, not worth it. (3) BA very easy (but expensive) with firearms as long as all flights are on BA metal and all flights use Heathrow. Gatwick/Heathrow combination and you are screwed. (4) Qatar, nice planes, great service from young thin FA, mainly from the Philippines. Have to overnight in Doha, two hotels in the airport, more than 8 hours Qatar pays. (5) Emirates seats are not as good in business than Qatar, service is better than Qatar. Young, thin GA mainly from Europe. Have to over night in Dubai, you ahem to stay off airport. Sometimes included in ticket. Better on board snacks on Emirates than Qatar. (6) Turkish, average seats, excellent food, good FA's, very expensive with firearms.
Planes: A350 v B787. Seats on A350 are 1 inch wider in all classes. A380 v B747 v 777. A380 more spacious plane.
What flight would I book today? I would book the BA flight. It avoids the Middle East. Next year, summer hunting, if war is over, the Qatar flight.

you dint always have to overnight in Doha or Dubai.
My trip next week on Qatar we land at 5:00 pm and leave at 2:00 am. I don’t consider that an overnight but they do provide a hotel. On the return it is a 2 hour layover. We will just hang out in the first class lounge which has free sleeping rooms as well.
Looking at Emirates was originally a 2 hour layover outbound. And an overnight on the return with them providing a hotel. That fit changed when the war started and they reduced capacity by switching from the A380 to 777. The slower plane lands later and you can’t do the short outbound layover for the time being. But I expect that will eventually change back.

Emirates is very nice. They are hurting from the war with Iran.
Delta is fine too, but can get pricey.
Qatar and Turkish are outstanding as well.
