IMHO, this casts the old .35 Whelen into a brand new light.

Full disclosure: While I do own a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .35 Whelen, I have NOT yet tried any loads using CFE 223.

I used the data in line for the Speer 250 grainer.
The Hornady 250 RNSP has a smaller bearing surface so I had to go up a couple of grains to get the velocity I wanted which was 2,690 fps.
Start with Speers minimum load and work up.
With the 225 grainers you can get up to 2,900 fps using Sierra data. Depending on projectiles you may have to come down a couple of grains with the Sierra 225 spbtgk and their max load that proves safe in my rifle I got 2,900 fps with zero pressure signs. With the 225 gn accubonds I had to drop 2gn and got the same velocity with zero pressure signs. The loads with the 259 and 225s give 4,000+ for of muzzle energy and the 225s are still delivering 2,000fpe at 400 yards so very potent hunting loads. We won't get into the 319s at 2,400+ fps that a while new world of excitement
As usual with all reloading start at the minimum load and work up watching for pressure signs.

You will have to give those loads a go mate. They do work well. It turns the Whelen into an entirely different beast with still very manageable recoil.
You will have a big smile on your face when you pull the trit on those loads.

Thank you. School is almost done for the summer, so I will definitely be working up a load with the CFE223 and 250s. Although the Hornady’s are in short supply here in Canada. So I may have to switch to another brand of 250, as well as giving the 225s a go. I must say I’m looking forward to this as I thought the 2500+ I was getting with 8208 was as much speed as I was going to get. The Hornady RN is a tough bullet, so hopefully whatever substitute I can find without going to a big dollar bullet is as good. Thanks again for my new reloading project.

Nothing wrong with the Speer 250gn hotcore. It will take out any big bull moose you hit properly with it ( then again so will a 22lr behind the ear)
Or any thing else in Canada or plains game you hunt.
Those Hornady round nose are tougher than people think. One put a golf ball size hole out the other side of a big oryx bull.

Well, I’ve loaded up some test ammo from 64 to 68 grains behind the 225 Sierra. With some luck I can test them over the next couple of days. I’m going to pick up some more 250 gn Hornady spire points as I only have about a dozen left in the box I have; and the 250 Speers as I thought I had some on hand but did not.

The max load with those stubby 225gn Sierra spbtgk is 70gn of cfe223. This gives a neat 2,800fps in my Whelen.
The MAX LOAD for the 250s is 64.5 this gives me just shy of 2,700fps.
For a good pg load work up to 69 gn of CFE 223 behind the 225gn accubond for 2,900 fps.
All will prove devastating on game.
The 200fn FTX at 3,000 fps isn't meat friendly.

I tried the Accubonds ahead of RL15, BL-C2, and maybe another powder a number of years ago. But, they didn’t shoot well enough, so I stuck with the Inter-locks. But, who knows? Maybe CFE223 will be the charm.

Varget was another good load for the accubond .
I used Noslers max load and got a bit over their book velocity and sub moa grot.

So, I’ve tried out a few loads. Turns out it’s the 225 Ballistic Tip I have and tried out earlier. So I loaded some up and shot those. None of them grouped well. The 225 Sierra ahead of 67gr of CFE223 was the success story of the day. The grid is 2”X2”. The group is 0.75” centre to centre for the three rounds. The other groups to the right are 3 of the Ballistic Tip loads. I think it fair to say my rifle does not like the Ballistic Tips.

Does anyone know if any of the Lipseys dealers have any of these rifles yet? I called my local dealer and they couldn't get either.

Whenever an uncommon or hard-to-get model from Lipsey's gets created, one of the first indicators of availability in the past has been a few individuals on GunBroker asking exorbitant prices for the one they're trying to flip. I haven't seen any of those yet.

So I've seen zero indication that these models are actually available. I've tried to order one at two different locations with no success.

PS - I think I've been waiting about 4 years now for the originally promised (but still non-existent) left-handed Montana Rifle Company 2022 rifles to appear. Good LH intentions are always appreciated but I never hold my breath... :D

Yeah I definitely won’t believe it until I see it. I believe Lipseys has the item number listed in their database as a product but not shown on the website. I’d like to take one on my moose hunt in September but that very wishful thinking.

As someone who is fond of the long-action classics from yesteryear, I really would like to support a left-handed offering like this. Hopefully so that it will be a success & they'll be inclined to do more of them in the future. I would love a left-handed Ruger African offering in something other than 375 Ruger one day.

The problem is I really have everything I need so putting too many hurdles in front of me or jacking up the price with a premium might be sufficient to give my notoriously weak will power the boost it needs to resist acquiring another rifle. I'll be curious to see what the price & availability will be.
 
Lipseys ordered 250 of each caliber in left hand from Ruger. Hopefully it doesn’t end up like other Lipseys offerings where they dry up fast.
 
Watched all sorts of video about the rifles and chamberings again. Some prefer the 9.3 with its higher shoulder so it will push anything faster. I would still prefer the 35W in the states since I may be able to find loaded ammo, but it’s doubtful I’d run across any 9.3. Worst case I take some 30.06 cases and resize them.

Naturally, it would suit my tastes better if Ruger just decided to release these in 30.06, but that would seem too logical.
