Tattoos... advice from those so adorned

After seeing the results of tatoo ink during a heart surgery, I really cannot see the need.
Open heart surgery. Chest is cracked open. Patient has extensive ink on his chest. The surgeon (my son was attending) says, "I see this more than people know. See how the ink has penetrated the surface, through the sternum and is visibly present in the peri-cardium (the sack that surrounds the heart). Not seeing ink on the heart but pretty damn close. " Surgeon goes on to say - why in the world would anyone anywhere think this is a good idea?

I will never understand the need to say to the world - "Hey, look at me" with tattoos.. Makes no sense.
 
I have several. Started after age 50. Everyone tells a story or stories. I celebrated my 60th birthday with my first safari and memorialized it with a tatto that contained the birthday, my zebra's pattern and my gemsbok.
As other's have said - research your artist, don't go cheap, look over the artists design C A R E F U L L Y and call out A N Y T H I N G that you want different - E S P E C I A L L Y spelling!

I have 6 or 7 tattoos, including a back piece of Ghost Rider. Theyre on my shoulders and upper arms, easily covered by sleeves in a business casual environment. I decided a long time ago that I didn't want to limit my employment opportunities to Hot Topic, so keep them out of sight.

The last one I got was a bottle of Maker's Mark and a Great Plains Rifle, a tribute to a buddy of mine who died. Those were his two most favorite things in the world.
 
the stigma of tattoos is long gone now, used to be when i was young you were a jail bird- ex navy man-bike rider or a wantabe something. today i see more sleeves on police(gang tats maybe). that being said, its your skin.

I begged my daughters not to get them, and so far they haven't. But I told them if you are going to get one, I'll pay for it. Because the only thing worse than your kid getting a tattoo is your kid getting a bad tattoo.

@leslie hetrick I agree “most” of the stigma against tattoos is gone and soon it might ALL be gone. I still don’t care for them on Men and really dislike them on Women with “Very rare” exceptions: Men & Women that served in Military and fought in a War and commemorate that with a tattoo “Marine”; Navy, Army Ranger etc.. Or they competed in the Olympics and add tattoo of “Olympic Rings” or something similar. For both the Smaller the tat the better. Now, I am very narrow mined on this issue and my views have failed to evolve with the times, and a persons tattoos are None-of-my-business….but that is my opinion (out dated as it is).

@Garciamarquez1918 - Good Luck on keeping Tattoos off your Daughters and that was a strict rule in our home as well. We told our kids - if you ever get a Tattoo we will immediately STOP paying for College AND you’ll start paying RENT at home or will need to find an apartment. It “worked” (sort of) —— right up until they Graduated College and moved out on their own !! We love them, tried our best, but it was kind of funny
 
It amazes me nowadays to see what people have done to their bodies with Tattoo's. When I see older people with Tattoo's fading and I must say it looks like someone threw paint and you can't make out anything . I just don't understand but each to their own.
When my girls started high school I told them if they got Tattoo's on their bodies I would love them but they would lose their Trust Funds....LOL .They never got Tattoo's ( I would never take away their Trust Funds) but it worked and they tell that story to their friends and laugh.

Lol. Different approaches with the same goal. I guess I could have made the same threat -- but I would have been incapable of following through with it. So far no tattoos on my girls (22 & 25) but of course that could change in the blink of an eye. I'm a total hypocrite too because I don't mind them on women -- just not the ones in my family.

@Garciamarquez1918 - I don’t like Tattoos on beautiful Women (detracts from their Attractiveness)….but am fine with Tattoos on Ugly Women because I don’t want to look anyway.
 
With you @HankBuck. A tattoo on a beautiful woman is a complete turn off. I’m not much of a Kim Kardashian fan, but she’s entirely right on her stance on tattoos… why put a bumper sticker on a Bentley?

I thought about it long and hard for a couple of years, but outside of just going with the trend, I just never saw any reason to get a tattoo. Besides, they never look good in 30 or 50 years.

Not to be to impolite but some tattoos on women can be really attractive but others can be downright ugly.
I saw an attractive young girl maybe 25 that had lots of tattoos everywhere as well as on her back.
These looked absolutely horrible to me and made an otherwise pretty girl look ugly.
These tattoos were only in black so when you were with her in bed you wouldn't know wether to make love to her or colour her in.

When I started my nursing career back in the mid 70s ( before I reality I wanted to become a truck driver) I had to shower a lady in her 40s. She had a rose tattoed on her breast. She made me laugh my head off when she said " when I got this tattoo at 20 it was a beautiful short stem rose. Now at 40 and a couple of kids later it's a Bloody long stem rose you would need a 12" vase to put it in ".
Tattoos are all well and good but you have to think what they will look like in 20-30 years time

My daughter asked if she could get a tattoo.
I asked her why and she gave me a pretty good reason ( to piss her mother off, we are divorced).
I told her as long as it's nothing to bad and can be covered for work.
We both ended up getting a small panda done that she designed. Hers is in the small of her back, mine is on my left chest near my heart with her name under it.
I was proud of my daughters descion in choice, design and placement. She also thought long and hard about it as well as asking my permission. If I had said no she would have done it anyway but she showed respect and asked. That was 22 years ago and she is now a multi disciplined doctor. GP, ED trauma specialist, high altitude and a couple of others.
