A new addition - a Holland & Holland Royal Double Rifle in 500-450 3.25" NE

As many of you have seen, I am selling 300 assorted guns in the Poulin Auction at the end of the Month. All are listed as from The Buckstix Collection. search Buckstix to see them.

However, I'm still actively buying and have added this Marvelous Holland & Holland to the Collection. Interestingly, its only 13 serial numbers below the famous "Big Stick" that was owned by Teddy Roosevelt. Its likely his and mine were on the same assembly bench in 1905. Take a look. My first H&H.

WELL ... I WANTED SOMETHING SPECIAL ... SO I CUT DOWN MY H&H ROYAL TO MAKE A HOWDAH RIFLE

... a few years ago I posted about my Westley Richards Howdah Double Rifle.

Well, I liked that Westley Richards so much .. that I decided to cut-off the barrels of my newly acquired Holland & Holland Royal and turn it into a Howdah rifle.

What do you think? Is this cool or what? This must be a "one-of-a-kind" ..

As usual, your comments are welcome.

Before cutting off the barrels I had to apply for a "short barrel" NFA license. With the new laws there is no longer a $200 tax stamp - its now free. But you still have to supply photos and finger prints, and NICS background check. It took about 5 weeks. I will bet I own the ONLY Holland & Holland Howdah Double Rifle.

Early and elaborate April Fools? Hoping so, and if not, well, I guess gent should like his guns.

You paid for it, you own it, you should like how you like it. Short-bus special or 42” barrels, gold or silver placards, powder coated pink even. If you think it’s cool, that’s what matters most.

My personal tastes, I thought it was pretty cool as it was for the last 120+ years.

Well, NO JOKE ... I would have liked 16" barrels like the WR to avoid the NFA registration, but the under-barrel sling swivel was in the way and it would have made a goofy looking rifle with a sling swivel right under the front of the muzzle. Cutting off the barrels at the back of the sling swivel base resulted in 14.1" barrel length. The front site was a magazine tube ring that I found in my junk drawer. A howdah rifle is used at very close range, so you aim with the ring above the rear site, and put your intended target's face in the center of the ring. ... "easy peasy"

I will enjoy bringing it to gun shows and hearing all the guys commenting .. "YOU DID WHAT?" .. I get similar comments on my custom 25acp NE Double Rifle.

I will be testing and load work-up as soon as the snow melts from last week's blizzard. We got 16" in 24 hours.

Well, at least you avoided making it look goofy, even with your junk drawer magazine tube front sight.

A Holland double remains one of my dream rifles, which I admit I wouldn't baby it, but hunt the rifling out of it, but still stings a little seeing one cut down. Regardless, will always enjoy the freedoms we have to make our guns what we want them to be, even if NFA paperwork is required at times. So while I might have cried a little on the inside, respect that its yours and you get to make it what you want within boundaries of the law.

so do I :D

If it was me- and I’d never have done this- I’d have gone for 18” rather than 14 to both keep the sling stud in a sort of reasonable position and still have a somewhat decently proportioned rifle instead of looking stubby and like it came from an old time hillbilly movie. Can’t imagine that 2” more than the WR would make that much difference in the feel or handling. When you inevitably decide to sell this, it will be another one we hear you talk about how much money you lost.

Given the discussion of the historic nature of this rifle in the earlier thread I’m quite surprised that you made such a drastic modification. Your gun and your right to do so. But seems like a bit of a waste to me.

Still not sure I fully believe that this isn’t a bit of a joke.

Was there a new wedge installed between the barrels. I can’t tell, I wonder the likelihood of them splitting.
I’m almost sick over this.

I used JB WELD to fill the gap between the barrels. Not sure if it will regulate, but if not I will custom load to get regulation. A howdah rifle only needs to group 3" at 25 yards and under.

This is no joke. I obtained an NFA License (shown above) and I cut off the barrels.

Why not have a second set of barrels made for it instead of destroying what you have?
I contacted H&H and a second set of barrels was $40,000 pounds - that's about $56,000 U.S. dollars.

There are other makers of barrel sets. Ken Owens?

Your gun, your business. I just can't imagine doing that to a Holland. Hope you got an amazing deal on it.

Ken Owen is retired

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
