Have you ever walked in a damp forrest, or looked upon a magnificent sunset, or sat by a mopane fire and your soul just smiled? Maybe it was the smell, or the tingle on the skin, but it was so deeply pleasing that it brought comfort. The five human senses are sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. We all go through our lives bumping into those every single day, and they land nowhere or somewhere depending upon a special receptor that some have, and some do not. I don't know where or what that receptor is, but when somebody is able to glean that inner glow from life we say they have 'the sniff'.
A person who has the sniff gets it, they look at the detail, they perceive the beauty, they are able to relax and get whafted over. I see the sniff in silent cigar smokers, and fishermen who watch a kingfisher and miss their bobbing float. The joy of listening to the tappets in the engine and wondering at the marvels under the hood.
Maybe you are an old acquaintance of the sniff, or maybe you have been rushing around and undervaluing life's every day gifts, but this thing is for sure - today never comes around again so grab it all with both paws and get the sniff!

maybe ole Joe is onto something after all! :D

All kidding aside.. I know exactly what you are talking about @Kevin Peacocke ..

There is nothing better than watching the sunrise from the porch of my little cabin facing the eastern sun in the early AM.. the brisk, cool, mountain air has a distinct scent coming off of the pines and aspens.. the visual side is simply stunning watching the big red ball rise between two 12K peaks.. the feel of the warm sun on your face when its cold outside, etc..

One of lifes great blessings for sure..

I do love your prose Kevin given I too have so richly experienced exactly what you are talking about. It makes me slow down in this busy world taking me to my passion which is the richness of the outdoors
