Judging Waterbuck

My waterbuck, shot in 2009, near Potchefstroom.

As we were walking near a stream, he appeared at the edge of a clump of trees, semi hidden by them. My PH said shoot, fast, and without the help of shooting sticks, I shot him frontally, in the lower chest, He turned to flee, and I shot him again, in the heart, killing him instantly.

All very fast and exciting, one of my favorite trophies.

Great hunt and very scittish animals... Same as hunting the grey ghost. We have excellent quality waterbuck.... ;-)

This waterbuck measures 29.5 and was shot with Russ Field Safari in May 2009. They are tough animals! It was shot in the East Cape.

Iv'e had the opportunity to watch quite a few waterbuck at close range from archery hides and have noticed that the larger bucks seem to have the lightest colored horns and I like to see their horns from the back to see if the rings wrap all the way around which I think denotes age, also a side veiw to see how much curve they have. I love those that have a loy of curve!

This animal is on my bucket list. Hennie du Toit will need to find me a nice one!

I shot mine because after seeing some I asked about shooting the PH said no. When he saw this one running away his eyes lit up and said we need to get this one if you want one. It placed #89, a Silver Medal trophy. I like the shape of the horns and the whole story we went thru to take him.

Divernhunter he is a stud

Thank you. He may not be the biggest but I really liked the shape of the horns. I hope to have the shoulder mount in the next month or two to hand on the wall.

Well lets do the same with the waterbuck ... any tips on judging them. This seems to be the place with the most views & people responding so lets keep it popular & the opinions flying!!!!

Judging?- horn length compared to face length and amount of forward curve. Waterbuck IMO, are among the most handsome of all the African antelope. This one Zimbabwe

Great pictures. Any suggestions on specific areas to find big waterbuck?

30.5” x 10.25” from the SVC in Zimbabwe. I saw him from the back of the Land Cruiser. Tapped on the roof. The PH stopped the Cruiser and I jumped off the side of the Cruiser and ran down the hill while keeping some thick brush between me and the waterbuck. I poked out of the end of the brush and shot him offhand as he spun to run. Was obviously a shooter so didn’t even judge him or ask the PH.

that is an amazingly huge waterbuck. The bases look like coke can size.
