A buffalo hunt with a 10mm

The 10mm is a fantastic round and has been used on black bear repeatedly with great success. That said, I would not choose that round for game that size.

Haha. I was almost certain this would be Razor. His show kind of grew on me after a while. I even have some of his broadheads. Then he started using a handgun on everything and I lost interest.

It goes to show that if you pick the proper equipment, practice with it and set up for the shot within it's limits then things work quite well.

I watched one of his show where he had a hippo at less than 2 yards while he was in the blind. He was thinking that he was going to have to shoot it but the hippo moved off finally. That could of gotten real interesting real quick.

I could be wrong, but did he change mags at around the 50 second mark? That said, I couldn't see any other holes on the carcass so I'm probably wrong.

if im not mistaken he fired two rounds, the first was vital and the second sealed the deal. he probaly changed his magazine in case he got charged and needed the extra ammo

We spent entire pages on this forum discussing bullets and calibers from 375 and up, for hunting DG and especially buffalo, including minimum legal caliber requirements per country, then the guy comes and shoots buffalo with a pistol, surrounded with PH;s carrying large caliber rifles. Hmmm... I am not impressed. (or we are all stupid)

Those who just shoot mostly rifles just need to be aware of the capabilities of some pistol rounds.

Shooting a pistol at a game animal isn't for everyone. A friend that I have found it interesting when he watched me shoot a cow elk with a .44 mag. He was so interested that he went out and bought himself a .44 mag pistol and started to shoot it. After the summer he decided that shooting that beast of a handgun wasn't for hm. He had a hard time keeping all the shots on a paper plate at 50 yards. But he is a accomplished rifle shot and has no problems hunting animals with a rifle, he just doesn't care to try a pistol again.

For those who say that Razor Dobbs had a PH or two backing him up with their .375's or bigger rounds what happens when you go hunting dangerous game? Is the PH a designated spotter without a rifle?

I carry my Glock Model 40 (6”barrel) 10mm in the woods when I don’t have a rifle with me. It’s loaded with 220gr hardcasts from either Buffalo Bore or Underwood. It holds a decent pattern at 25 yds., but it’s amazing to me seeing the 10mm used on that buffalo, especially at 35 yds! I never have even considered using it on an elk, let alone something larger? Guess I’m too conservative.

But the margin of error, differs greatly between rifle and handgun, with size of animal.
Shooting a handgun is more difficult (or less accurate) then any rifle.

In power, we have following approximate differences:
10 mm auto - up to 700 ft lbr (900 joules)
375 H&H - up to 4.300 ft lbr (5.500 joules)

Hunting large DG animals with handgun, I dont see it as ethical, as simple as that.

In any case, we never discussed on the forum DG hunting regulations for a handgun?
Where is it allowed and under what conditions?

And what is the PH view on this way of hunting? What kind of firearm do they prefer their clients to bring? Handgun, or rifle?

I’ve seen African hunting videos of hunters using handgun cartridges like the .454 Casull, .460 and .500 Smith and Wesson, etc. on DG. But, those cartridges’ power are a far cry from a 10mm? I just don’t know. Having never hunted DG, I tend to balk at even using a .375 after seeing videos of buffalo running off or charging after taking a 300gr .375? I have larger stuff I personally can shoot as well as my .375. Maybe I’m just naive or too cautious?

That’s right. Hunting and killing those two Cape buffalo with my 10mm are my two biggest feats. Not just huge for me but huge for the 10mm auto.

A question firmly in the realm of personal judgment. When the situation is not based upon self-preservation, then the question further distills to simply an ethical or humane one – should you?

Perhaps more than any other single element in the complex nature and nuances of big game hunting, self-acknowledgment of whether you “should or shouldn’t” most strongly defines the essence of what it means to be a hunter. It is certainly a stronger measure of a hunter than a video assessment whether you “can or can’t”.
