Gun Insurance With Airlines

Yes you can get as much insurance as you can afford and it's not connected to the airline you fly. Just do a Google search for firearms insurance.

I am concerned about what happens if Delta loses my new $10,000 double rifle. Can I get insurance in case they lose it or it’s stolen?
SCI offers firearms insurance. Of course there are many options.

Check your homeowners/renters insurance policy and check with your insurance company.

Most policies only cover firearms to a certain limit. However, you should be able to add personal valuable property insurance to cover property in excess of of your homeowners/renters insurance policy allows.

I have additional coverage policy for my firearms and camera equipment that covers the value of each of my firearms and photography equipment. Whereas my regular policy has a limited amount for theft, loss, etc. that barely covers the loss of 1 firearm. With my VPP coverage policy regardless of where or how my firearm(s) and/or my photography equipment is lost, damaged, or stolen, the VPP policy covers the value of each firearm and photography equipment.

I have an addition to my homeowner's policy that covers loss up to $10K for any calamity except flood I think. If I added flood insurance to my homeowner's policy then my firearms insurance would be covered for that as well AFAIK. The price wasn't too bad as I have all our insurance bundled with one carrier. Look into prices and the policy constraints, it's a minefield out there, YMMV.

One issue I had with extending the homeowner's policy was that it not only was more costly, but required me to get everything appraised. Invoices were not sufficient. I told them to jump in a lake and went with collector's insurance. It required appraisals only for firearms that had a value greater than 25K individually.

In my case appraisals were only required if I went over $10K. Serial numbers were not required to be disclosed, just a description and an appraised amount IIRC. I opted to stop at the $10K because I don't have $10K worth of firearms out in the field at any time.

I have family in the insurance business and they tell me insurance is like any other product. The cheapest isn't always the best and neither is the most expensive. One of the things that you need to do is get the carrier's solvency, reputation and history for actually paying out on legitimate claims. Does the company pay or hassle you into getting a lawyer or into submission?

How do I find out that information? I ask my relatives. Sorry. :giggle:

Oh and it gets better: a good company today might be sold or re-managed into tomorrow's company that flat out renegs on its promise to pay. Sue us they'll say.

By now it should be clear I don't exactly have great love for the insurance industry. I also have no love for the automobile industry yet I own two of them.

Just ask the people who survived hurricane Katrina about so-called legitimate insurance companies.

So, do your due diligence and try not to base your decision to buy insurance on cost alone. Same goes for cars.

SIAI.net has saved my butt more than once.

Had a friend that lost 2 rifles coming back from mozambique. The airline gave him $300 . His home owner policy covered his guns so they paid him another $800. But here's the deal. His insurance agent told him he had to go by his insurance book rates for deprecation Told him if he would of had them appraised before his trip they would have had to pay appraised value. Something to check on with your insurance company before you go. Cause $ 1100.00 dosent come close to paying for 2 CZ rifles topped with leoupold scopes.

Interesting. I wonder what sort of appraiser the insurance company would accept. What if I hypothetically found an "appraiser" that valued my Marlin Glenfield model 60 .22 rifle for $5000.00? I'm now just curious enough that I'll send my insurer an email.

My wife works for one of the airlines major carriers. Her advice was to get a specific gun policy. I have done the SCI (Sportsman;'s Insurance Agency) twice on previous trips. It is a yearly coverage and will cover them wherever they are located home or traveling. I had all custom built guns and they valued them appropriately.

I have never had to use my gun insurance so all I can say is that ift is fairly easy to do the application.

Those of you with the SCI one. I am interested as my last trip to the Yukon, with rifle, scope, spotting scope and binos in one pelican case. I had a ton of money invested in that case. And getting it insured was a fortune and a pain in the ass. I see SCI site advertises $1.25 per $100. Which seems totally fair. On my trip to the yukon I basically carried all my spotter and binos in my pack. And took the change on the gun. Would love to pack it all in my pelican vault and not stress about it.

Do you know if it covers Canadians as well or is this a US only policy?

Have you ever had to collect?

I have the NRA initial $2500 insurance and separate gun insurance of $10,500 with Lockton Affinity out of Kansas City which more than covers any and all my traveling (when I use to travel).

Never had to collect.

We have in G an insurance with the confirmation of a gunsmith is sufficient as he estimates the real market value of the weapon. This value is replaced in case of loss.
Does not cost much, but recommended.

Did you sign and do paper work with NRA? Had a friend that tried to collect , but they said you cant just be a member you have to do all the paper work and sign up for it.

Its been a long time. Had to make a couple of calls. The $2500 ended in 2018. If you were a member before then, you still have it...assuming you are still a current member. It is currently administered through Lockton Affinity. There is currently nothing on the NRA website about the $2500. If I ever have a claim, I contact straight to Lockton Affinity. I had a couple of other questions for the young agent I was talking to. He is suppose to get back to me.

All insurance is wrought with out-clauses where they don't pay. Or they argue your double is worth $200. Etc.

The BEST way to ensure is to get a policy for $180 per year ($50k coverage, double that for double coverage) with Eastern Insurance Fine Firearm Insurance. Its a specialty line. It's 1/3rd to 1/5th what a rider is on your homeowners. They don't even require scheduling your guns if under $10k in value each. Great product. Good claims team that is fair.

It pays for itself every year versus getting UPS and Fedex to insure your guns if you're sending them out for work to be done too. Those guys charge a lot for shipping insurance and they never pay arguing it wasn't packed well enough anyway.

The company Rookhawk suggest has a great reputation. I personally don't own any firearms worth anywhere near $10,000 and more. Many members on this site do though. And some of them just self insure which is fine if you have a super healthy bank account.
