458 Lott ate my QD Warne rings

You also said you prefer the levers on the other side, so I may assume you have never used a CZ double square bridge with Warne mounts.
Correct. Did I miss that they only go on one way? I like them on the left side because I never hold the rifle by the receiver with my left hand and the knobs on the right are in my way loading and during remediation. I have used warnes on Ruger bases and Warne bases and EGW bases.

Yes with the recoil lug set up the Warnes can only go on the one side, the Alaskan rings are a different set up and do go on the other side. Talleys can only be mounted on the right on the cz as well. My Near Alphamount uses a three ring set up as well, but all machined out of one piece.

Near Alpha mount is one serious piece of equipment. The SSK TSOB is the only other thing I know of where a large amount of recoil was factored into the design of the mount and three rings were used.

Yes Richard Near makes good stuff. I spent a few hours with him in his shop. He has some impressive equipment . I had lent him one of my cz for him to try and design a mount but he was just too busy with his existing line.

A real nice guy , was a pleasure to spend some time with him.

Still following up with this thread because I think scope mounting issues affect many who have a BRNO 602 or CZ 550. The biggest issue I see for scope mounting for either rifle are the limitations of the large dovetail system and the recoil lug cut-out prevents flexibility for location of the rear ring.

I think the same specs are/were used for both the ZKK 602 and 550 receivers. So scope mounting issues will be similar. I remain unsure as to the necessity for QR type mounts- although they seem to be very popular. I can remove a scope mounted with simple rings/bases in a minute or less. Just loosen two screws with a driver or small L. werench- done. Many mounts without the QR levers are basically the same as those with levers- and they will return to pretty close to the same index point after remounting. I can't imagine having to quickly take a scope off for speed anyway- just doesn't makes sense. I'm trying to come up with a scenario to explain the necessity... take first shot at DG, scope blows up,,, hurry, hurry, hurry, speed is critical to remove scope for followup shots??? To each their own imagination I guess. If I carry a small wrench or driver in my "kit", I can remove or reattach a scope with these simple type mounts every bit as easily as if there were levers and almost as fast. No matter the design, most shooters, me included, would want to take a shot or two after reattachment to check for "zero".

I have a BRNO 602 in 375 HH and used the simple Leupold ring mount bases to mount an older Leupold M8 4x scope. These Leupold mounts are simple and well designed and as a bonus, one of the least expensive for this application. The lines are clean, there are no extra "snags" hanging here or there, the system is strong, nothing moves under recoil, it is plenty quick (two torx head screws) to remove or reattach the scope. It will index upon reattachment as close as any other QR type system. BTW this rifle, I believe DOM of 1994, shows no scope mount-to-bore runout or POI issues as do some of the more current CZs apparently have.

I don't know how many inch pounds of torque I apply but it is quite a bit. The #8 screws seem plenty strong as I have tested them with excessive force with both a torx drive and the supplied torx L wrench and the head seems more likely to wallow out than for the screw to break. The torx size is # 15. I have noticed no peening or setback in the left rear lug, no movement of the mounts nor scope in the rings. The medium height rings provide plenty of bolt clearance with this scope. IMO, the high ring mounts of this model would be much too high for this set up especially with a BRNO stock that has a geometry for open sight use. The scope's eye piece is approx. 40 mm OD. The scope is mounted, rotated 90* left so there is minimal port interference for both ejection and loading.

Pics show setup.

I fired off 15 or so rounds last evening, trying some RL 15 powder with some 500 grain a frames. Dialed in scope , and with the Swift's and the factory Noslers everything stayed put . It was around freezing temps so I had a jacket on, recoils wasn't bad at all.

The new Warne rings, flexible gasket stuff I used , tightening on the dovetails more and the second front ring all seem to have done the trick so far. I will try and fire off a few rounds a day for the rest of the week and see how it holds up. Tube has not slid in the rings, and adjustments have been true. I just hope it stays that way or I will be changing the set up.

All the shooting has been off sticks. If I am fortunate to do a buffalo hunt that is how I will be shooting.

@fourfive8 I used those Leupold rings on my 375 for a long time, and just used them on my cz in 416 Rigby, with an old Zeiss conguest 3-9. Scope didn't move at all. The rings also looked great after year of use on the 375 .

Took the 458 and 416 to deer camp for my friends to try out. Turned out a little whitetail stepped out that my cousin wanted me to take a poke at . The 458 was ready to go as I was just about to walk down a seismic line when the deer stepped out.

It was walking away from me, just over 200 yards away .I had a good rest on the sticks and let a 500 grain A-frame go. Went through lengthwise and the deer just fell over sideways , kicked a bit and that was it.

Practiced a fair bit with the new ring set up and it worked good.

Cousin and his son were happy for the meat, and I was very satisfied with how the gun is shooting. I had my cousins son sit with the 458 Lott . It will be a few years before he can shoot it, but he is doing ok with a 308 for now.
