As usually happens, a previous thread for me to thinking again about the .35 Whelen. I’ve got a late New Haven M70 Classic chambered in .30-06. I know that it’s a simple conversion to a Whelen, but do any of you have suggestions for a good gunsmith for the work? What would be the expected cost?

When you get the conversion done make sure you read all the posts on the Whelen so you can load it to its FULL potential. A Whelen loaded with a 225gn bullet @ 2,900fps is an awesome round.

@flat8,

I am in the same boat as you. I picked up an early Model 70 Classic Stainless Featherweight chambered in 270 Win this week. I do not think a rebore is possible due to the svelte barrel profile. It needs a new barrel. I am thinking maybe a #3 or #4 contour at 24” with a 1 in 12 twist. I may give Pac-Nor or Hart a call to discuss the project.
