Families whose cats die will not be allowed to get another under the proposal

Pet cats could be banned from a region in
New Zealand as part of radical new proposals designed to protect native wildlife.

Under Environment Southland’s “pest plan”, cat owners in the small coastal village of Omaui will have to neuter, microchip and register their pets with the local authority.

After their cat dies, they will not be allowed to get another.

The proposals have angered local residents, who accused the council of behaving “like a police state”.

But the local authority want to protect 230 hectares of lowland and forest on Omauri that is home to small native birds including the fantail, brown creeper, grey warbler and shining cuckoo kingfisher, as well as larger ones such as the tui.

Biosecurity operations manager Ali Meade told national news outlet Newshub: “There’s cats getting into the native bush, they’re preying on native birds, they’re taking insects, they’re taking reptiles, all sorts of things. They’re doing quite a bit of damage.”

Submissions on the Southland regional pest management plan can be made until 23 October, but residents have already said they will petition against the proposals.

Nico Jarvis told the Otago Daily Times that owning a cat was the only way to manage rat infestations in the area.

‘’If I cannot have a cat, it almost becomes unhealthy for me to live in my house,’’ she said.

The local community understood the argument for conservation, she said, “but I think long term, the ramifications of this are not something that even non-cat owners will be comfortable with. It’s like a police state.”

Anyone violating the ban will be told to remove the cat, and as an ”absolute last resort’’ Environment Southland will take the cat from its owner, according to officials.

Not sure this is going to work.

The first time I went to NZ I landed in Chi-Chi and was told to remain seated by the stewardess and the door opened and 4 lovely girls in uniform walked down the isle and donned their gas maskes and doused us with insectacide and germacide like we were all mexicans.

I don't know about now, but back then there were oceans of rabbits there that they would poison and drop dynamite on out of planes as there was nothing to eat them....or the hundreds of heads of game that I shot with a professional meat hunter.

Black Swans could be seen at the tidal marsh areas and jade could be picked up by the ton.

In downtown Chi-Chi I would listen to the Wizard talking while elevated by his ladder and then go to the Gresham Hotel Pub and drink Lion Brown like I was going to the gallows at sunset.

Great place, nice people and some pretty hot girls. Just some strange ideas on the environment.

Me either Hogpatrol. I’m pretty sure I would take a dim view of “the authorities” trying to take my cat.
For sure. The way I read the proposal was existing felines would be grandfathered but no new ones after they passed on to pussycat heaven.

I support it, wish we would do that here too.

They cause so much damage in australia and new zealand it ain't funny. The amount of possum and sugar glider tails my old mans farm cat leaves at the back door is ridiculous.

Attached is a famous photo of a feral cat shot in aus with its stomach contents turned out. Each item is a separate animal.

Or that’s the kind of law I can get behind. Next step, barking house dogs!

And muzzle brakes! They should be banned! :A Stirring:

I can’t imagine this will go over with kitty lovers!

My locale, cats and dogs are supposed to be on a leash. On the loose, they're owners can be fined or worse, categorized as feral and subject to "disposal".

If you could teach the damn thing to eat the Possums and leave the rest alone you'd be ahead of the game.

The Pennsylvania game book used to request any cats seen in the woods be shot since they are the #1 killer of wildlife in the state.

In Virginia, wild cats are everywhere, amazing inbreeding going on. If a barn owner puts out food for their "official" barn cats, and a pack of the wild cats eat it...the barn owner is now the owner of the wild cats...and can be fined $70/each for their capture/spay-neuter and vaccinations. A pack of 15 wild cats takes up residence in your barn, $1,000+ fine. But...you can't shoot them, that's mean. It's why "SSS" fits so well (shoot, shovel, shut-up).

I can't see a reason to ban cats that stay in someone's house. But most are left to their own devices outdoors far too much of the time, or are simply feral. Cats kill all kinds of wildlife indiscriminately. Sort of like toxic waste. If people can't keep house cats IN their house, I support the move.

Australia has a major problem with wild cats.
I used to shoot them with a 222.
Shot one using a 150 grain bullet in a 30/06. Just filleted the cat.
They kill a million native animals every night in Australia. The army undertakes an exercise and a part of it is to shoot feral cats. I believe they shot 600 in one weekend out around a small town called Quilpie.

-40c is good for some things , yet again.
