Hunting reports
Africa

Folks, looking into this. There’s a few cases of foot and mouth in South Africa from what I can see. And has been since May 2024?

Has anyone had any issues moving capes/horns between areas for taxidermy or for dip and pack? Obviously a lot of folk will hunt an area then maybe use a taxidermist 4,6,8 hours away in a different Provence. With a lot of these taxidermists arranging collection of trophies from outfitters for dip & pack from a distance away. Is it an issue or no problem?

A real shame for any farmers affected but just curious if it has any affect at all on hunters?

Cheers!

As far as I know foot and mouth is endemic in parts of Africa. The foot and mouth disease virus is relatively easy to kill but very readily transmissible. The dipping process should degrade the viable virus particles.

Looks like there are issues in several provinces currently.
The Outfitter and Taxidermist will comply with the local laws and regulations when transporting your trophies.
They do not want FMD on their properties.

All my trophies in Botswana traveled across the red line at least twice.
Dried outside the area, shipped into the area. Treated and D&P and shipped onward to Taxidermist in RSA. At least four provincial borders and one international border crossed.
No issues.

Foot and Mouth have always been around.
If you hunt in a FMD-/red line area your trophies(skulls, skins, etc.) have to be salted & dried and can only be moved after 30 days from the property where you hunted.

Thanks guys. Appreciated it!

Slight apprehension about the capes being dried / salted. Is this just the standard salting process as per normal? Or is anyone aware of any additional steps?

Just conscientious the more you treat these capes the likely less workable they become for the taxidermist back home but is what it is.

Good to know it’s still doable though and doesn’t sound like it’s that uncommon. Thanks for the help!

Just the standard normal salting process like you'll salt any other cape

Jake, Sorry to bug you again. I was wondering if you could share a. couple actual pics of this crossbow with me?

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc

Good morning John, I just read your setup procedure for the northstar duplicator ator. I found it very hand and I did learn some things. I have the same machine and I am having a problem i can not figure out and was hoping you could shed some light on the subject.
