300 wm heavy bullet or switch up to 338 wm?

You definitely need a .300 Weatherby and a .340 Weatherby.

Why stop on a half-measure???
hey, they upped their game in .338! .338-378 baby! lol I actually love that round (in .338). The 338 Win MAG is a misnomer. It shoots w/ 3006 velocities (i.e. 2850.) It's ok. No need for more than a 300 WM in 30.

The one problem with the .300 Win. Mag. (and this isn't meant to be a criticism) is the extra case capacity that it does have over the .338 Win. Mag. goes away with heavy bullets because of the seating depth usually needed. Both the .300 and .338 Win Mags were not really designed to take the long heavy bullets produced in those calibers. Lighter monometal bullets help that issue a lot because they shouldn't shed weight like a lead core. I sure have been eyeing the .30 and .338 Noslers for a long while for that reason. They should do a little better with the longer bullets. I wish they'd gain more popularity though. They are maximized for a standard length action.
.340 Wby., .338 RUM etc. will be obviously be better when a hard quartering shot is needed but, not as nice to carry and no fun to practice with when in a lighter weight "elk" rifle. Of course you could put a break on them but that has downsides too. I've been going over your exact same consideration myself for a long time already and now you've got me Jones'n for my "perfect" elk rifle again.
Yeah, it's a real shame. LOL Top is 300 WM, bottom 338 WM. The case is longer. They are effectively same w/ bigger bullets, excepting the higher BC/SD of the longer, trimmer .308 pills...The longer 300 case accepts the longer bullets and shoots them well (to 3,000 yds with some folks.)

This is the 200 grain bullet in 300 WM

I've shot a large herd of animals with a .300 WM. My favorite is a 200 grain Swift A frame. Faster, lighter bullets impress folks at long ranges. I prefer the reliability of an exit wound at any range.

The reason I shoot a 300 WM instead of another .30 cal is that I can push a 200 cal bullet into an animal instead of a lighter load at the same trajectory. All is well when your game goes down. I really like 200 grain A frames in my 300 WM.

FWIW. Every guide, outfitter and PH I've met preferred the heavy bullet over the lighter. I'm no expert.

Ammo manufacturers seem they need to impress folks with an inch or two of trajectory at 400 yards. I hunt closer than that.

Have fun hunting.

OK then, a .35-.378 WEATHERBY MAGNUM! Make Townsend @Bob Nelson 35Whelen proud!
lol too much of a good thing...idt they make the BC/SD bullet that has any advantage in that case (too short for caliber bullets-ironically why the 06 case works-you can jam more powder in.) Now, the 358 STA (what is that? .358-416 Rem?)-that's about it! :) But, we defer to Bob! :p A great example of what i say can be found in .416 (they all shoot 2,450 fps, but the std action Chatfield-Taylor takes about 70 gr of powder, the Rem 80 gr, the Rigby 100 gr-no significant difference. Lower pressure on the Rigby results in slightly lesser recoil. Decreasing efficiency once you get a cartridge case to a certain level...'still working on the .224-50 BMG w/ 2 belts. Covid caused the extra belt, but learning to live with it...

Well, BOB could take that .35-.378 well beyond ANY published velocities using his Revisionary brand chronograph and the swirling magnetic field from the recently discovered 300 mile long asteroid impact crater that he lives above in NSW. That aside, I've loaded 70.0gr of RL15 with a 400gr Barnes original in my .416 Taylor out of my 8.5lb. Interarms Whitworth (no scope). I don't have a chronograph but I think it's a medium load because the recoil is quite milder compared to my 10.5lb scoped CZ 550 .416 Rigby shooting factory 400gr. Hornady DGSs? I think I need to bump up the Taylor load?

Oh no you don't...you were supposed to suggest a .338-.378 so we could all be thoroughly amused by the confusing moniker. While we're at useless cartridge creation why not a .338-.465 that way nobody could ever find brass as the two people that own .465's would don their smoking jackets and shout Bully, Bully as they wrestled over the two boxes of brass ever made?

lol the .338-378 is a Fantastic cartridge! It also happens to be a .338-460 Wby. ;)

He swears this upon the graves of both Oliva Newton-John, the Bee-Gees and the hole in the ground where they will dump Nicole Kidman's lifeless bod, eventually...LOL

77 gr Varget in the Taylor. It kicks, so i agree w/ what you said! But, the buff, ele and rhino die, too. I carry it in the thick stuff for BIG black bear, but they have been very lucky to date. LOL They've only felt the 7 and 300 thus far! lol

Don't forget the other boys' from OZ, AC/DC! Bob's favorite!

They being the church of latter-day saints, of course (L. Ron Hubbarddddd.) Kidman has been on a lotta dianetics. The RCC f'd up S. & C. America to our chagrin, the mormons ruined the boy scouts...where can a boy get a break in this world? lol IF they just left S. & C. America ALONE, we'd not have a border crisis today!

Oyyyyyyyy! Slack jaw, not much to say. LOL They were good, musically and i like how they quit their day jobs to cash in on something they loved!

mocking it all by calling themselves "Men at Work!" LOL

if it makes you feel any better, mine is closer to Master of Disaster! ;)
she got a $100 speeding ticket just yesterday in a private housing development by non-cop cops (that i pay $100/mo for) in a glorified UTV. that said, she drives a 400 hp AWD car w/ massive brakes, tires. but i still had to lecture her like a Dad. it was a peaceful eve...lol

I once thought about picking up a 338-378 but I didn't want to put a 1/2 a pound of powder into each case to pull the trigger.

I think that I could fit one of my .340 Weatherby cases bullet and all into that 338-378 case.
