Opinions on this rifle please. Yes, I know It’s not a heym or VC but is it dependable.

I have never owned one. I have n ver owned one. Only complaint that I have heard was felt recoil, especially again not cheek.

A huge plus for the Merkel is the Greener cross bolt. As with the Heym you can therefore sleep easy on the problem of barrel opening. It seems to be a no-nonsense simple double, I would take it second to the Heym over any of the manufactured brands.

I shot water buffalo and a handful of shots at a target with one chambered for 470NE. It worked fine. The rifle belonged to an outfitter and has seen a fair bit of use. He had another one in 9.3x74R. If I recall he said he hadn’t had any trouble with either one.

Let me know if your serious about that very rifle as im in the process of negotiating a deal on it. Saying that you being on the right side of the ocean would be better off with it than me I say go for it!!

Mine shoots well no problem, I’ve shot a couple hundred rounds out of it, plus 2 Buffalo, 1 elephant and a Giraffe. It’s never let me down.

what caliber?

I had to decide between the Merkel and Krieghoff. Spoke to some very competent gunsmiths in SA and the feedback was that the Merkel's weakness is its trigger, which is the Krieghoff's strength. I chose the Krieghoff.

can you elaborate on the weakness of the trigger?

I hear this a lot, but I wonder how much of it is real and how much just repetition of a story? The internet does that. In any event I am sure a bit of gunsmithing could solve it if it is there.
To put it to bed though please can I ask any of the Merkel double owners on here whether they have had any trigger, or other problems? Reason being we have a young learner PH who needs a double and the Merkel is so much more reasonable in SA.

Like I said in an earlier comment I put mine through a bit of work for a couple of years with no issues and it wasn't new when I bought it either. I know 3 other people with Merkels and no issues.

I was talking to @KMG Hunting Safaris about this as he has a merkel in 500ne. He did have the triggers bend on him but merkel replaced them and no issues since. Feel free to correct me if im wrong Marius

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
