Who Likes to Hunt the Tiny 10 Antelope?

I understand. Without the slams many would not hunt some animals leaving them in limbo conservation wise. Sure I have mixed thoughts on why for instance there are scores of different Chamois! I think I'd be one and done on that one.
The Tiny 10 is a great example of a slam that takes you to many different countries and the experiences along the way, at least for me, have been priceless.

I agree. I'vew never entered anything in the SCI Awards program, but I use their Awards Issue to see what the "less common" animals are available, have planned some of my hunts to specifically hunt some of those animals, resulting in hunts in multiple areas and countries.

For those who do have T10 on the menu, what is next and where will you go for that? It will take 2 or 3 more trips for me to finish mine. I need animals in South Africa and Namibia for sure...maybe Moz depending on how I do it. Even if you are dedicated to trips for T10 only, it would take at least 3-4 trips to different places, assuming you take everything on the list with no issues the first time. Easier said than done.

Namibia in April for a dik-dik and a klipspringer. Knock on wood that will be 4.

Also, I spoke with John X Safaris at the Houston Safari Club last week and if you hunt with them they have 7 of the 10 on their property, two camps. The seven are the Blue Duiker, Common Duiker, Steenbuck, Oribi, Vaal Rhebuck, Klipspringer and Cape Grysbuck. One could make great progress in one trip if desired.

My plan is go there next. Probably go to Moz one day for the Red Duiker and Suni.

Definitely Mozambique for red and blue duiker, suni and oribi and the Eastern Cape for cape grysbok. Don’t know if I’ll ever get to Namibia for dik-dik.

Honestly if you add up the total cost of the trip, upgrading to the 21 day license is not a big percentage more. Where it gets expensive is if the outfitter charges a lot of extra markup or if you add days. And of course the trophy fees.

If your Outfitter is reasonable and has quota available, which probably is the key factor to making him reasonable You should be able to book the hunt you want, for example if it's 10 days, ask how much is the trophy fee on a gerenuk. He will likely respond with an answer but add that it requires the 21 day license. So ask how much to upgrade to that license but without adding days. Probably adds up to a lot to add just the one animal. So then would it work for you to share a 21 day license? On the big license you can take multiples of some critters. And you could also take an iconic animal or two

In Namibia I am going with Jan Oelofse Hunting Safaris. Those two little guys and a Sable are the primary targets. With a warthog and Hartebeest as well, plus a few targets of opportunity in mind as possibles.

I enjoy seeing everyone’s photos but I just cannot get interested in hunting the tiny 10. I’ve passed sharp’s grysbok in Zimbabwe and red duiker in Cameroon. I’ve seen many dik dik on Namibia. They just don’t spark an interest. I’ll hunt Tanzania and Uganda this year and next. I suspect I’ll pass on taking dik dik in those locations as well, but maybe I’ll take an oribi in Uganda. Maybe I’ll regret it one day but I just haven’t had a big interest when I see the tiny antelopes while hunting.

I hope you’ll post a report. They were my first safari in 2002 and 2004 and had great hunts, but you don’t hear much about them anymore.

I totally get that but with you having so much experience and love for roe deer hunting, I thought you might like some of the little antelope. As much as I love DG (and I know you do as well), if I had the time/$, I could see myself chasing all the duiker varieties to get experiences all over Africa. When I was with Boddington last month, my favorite mount in his local museum was his zebra duiker....something like this.

I’ll be hunting massailand in a few months. All the outfitters I compared it was actually a very significant percentage more to add even one premium species on a pre-booked hunt. I’ve seen some good specials for the same year, but adding just one premium specie is adding $15k on the lower end depending on outfitter in Maasailand from what I researched. I’m content with buffalo and grant and Thompson gazelles for the pricing. Uganda has much better pricing for a few unique PG species.

You definitely got me there on the roe deer comparison but I just can’t get interested in the tiny 10 for whatever reason. Roe deer though I’d really like to collect one from every European country.

Well sometimes we just like what we like...doesn't have to be justified to anyone in the end. I could easily find myself getting a roe deer in every hunt able country. I even made a list of what that would look like last year. One thing I've learned about myself is that I do enjoy making lists and hunting through those lists, not for any award/recognition but just to experience different cultures and hunting environments.

On my Tanzania trip we were with Johan Calitz. Johan said, “I’ve never in my entire life spent so much time glassing oribi. I love it!” I love the little antelope of Africa. Ever since I saw my dad’s duiker as a kid, I was infatuated with God making such a small creature to have its special place on the Dark Continent.

I would love to see your taxidermy ideas. That's an awesome statement from Calitz. It's interesting to see the PHs get excited after so many years in the field. If they insist on you shooting something, you should probably do it. I like Peter Flack's writing about klipspringer and saying the PH saw one up in the rocks and said, wow...monster. Peter acted disinterested and the PH said then I'm going to shoot him. Peter got the idea and took the shot and it was a huge klippie.

Unfortunately, my steenbok and first duiker (much larger than this one from Zim) didn’t make it back from Botswana. Otherwise, I’d also have a steenbok on here.
