This is the Lehigh .458dia. 305gr Extreme Penetrator bullet. The website states it is optimized for 45-70 velocity, but wondering if .458 Win is to much, or if useful hunting loads can be worked up.

I don't currently have a 45-70, but I do have a 458Win, a 458 Lott and 2 450 Rigby rifles. The Lott and the Rigby's could probably push this 300 grain bullet to near 3,000fps.

Reduced loads might be practical for Deer and other game.

I'd be wary of hunting any Dangerous Game with a 300 grain bullet in .458dia., but a 400 or 450 grain of this design I'd try.

Anyone have practical experience with these bullets on game?

That design = extremely close range targets. I wouldn't trust it to hit a pie plate at thirty yards. Clearly something meant to shoot across a room into a thin skinned target ... high on crystal meth.

Interesting design. I’d like to see them fired into test media ( not just water) to see how they perform. Also opening velocity thresholds. Looks like something I put into my Dewalt screwdriver to drive screws.

It's a 45 caliber self defense round made for handguns. Supposed to open up and expand when entering soft tissue.

Those are designed to achieve cavitation on steroids. More than the bubble envelope surrounding a passing hydro bullet. They just look different. Don't know about longer range stability or accuracy. Interesting concept. Would like to hear real life reports on effectiveness.

The .451dia is for handguns, but this .458dia is listed for rifles. The 300gr weight is probably ideal for the 45-70, but on the light side for anything with more powder capacity.

Might be great for Bears and Deer, or possibly big Eland at 150 yards or less. They do make a .308dia 150 grain that has a similar design. Large hogs would be my target of choice for those.

It would be interesting to see wound cavity and penetration at 3,000fps from a 450 Rigby.

305gr is too light for DG cartridges. In this caliber class, the bullet would have to be a bit heavier to make a much better SD. 400gr or better 450gr were in this case perfect. Then we could use it for cartridges like the 450 Rigby or 460 Weatherby Magnum, and why not test it by shooting heavy DG like buffalo for example. The bullet seems to be sufficiently strong and hard built.

Well, since it is designed to penetrate as well as force fluid forcefully to the sides of the bullet, I ordered some 9mm rounds for self defense. The idea is to penetrate heavy clothing and still be devastating...though I pray to never find out! Have some 380 rounds on backorder--they need even more help with heavy clothing.

As a DG round, they may be lighter, but so are some of the new rounds with breakaway petals, and we've seen pictures of the damage they do. It seems that revolutionary bullet types are changing the way we think about weights.

I take it you have not tried them or can’t shoot a handgun well.
9in pie plate at 100 yds with a 44 mag is doable with out much problem.

Just for the stuff we have in fl. I don’t see the need in them over standers ammo.

I have no idea the shipping cost from here to Costa Rica. I can do my research on shipping and get back with you later today.

I didn't see your request re: ship co’s. My last shipment was 2023. Quotes from SBS Logistics ($1,198), Badger Cargo ($1,184 - used them) & AHG Trophy Shippers ($1,746). AHG owner's an asshole so wouldn't have used him anyway. Eastern Cape - Houston, TX, so your mileage may vary. NEVER use Karl Human Taxidermy aka Wild Africa Taxidermy on Eastern Cape. Trophies arrived shattered with no padding/packing material.
