What is the market for tanned zebra hides in the USA?

Great choice to hunt your own. If you just want pillows, etc you can look into backskins, far less material and easy to pick up from taxidermists. Check out taxidermytrophysales.com and safariworks taxidermy as well.

Lots of good info, thanks.

It will be my first hunt and I'm leaning pretty heavily toward hunting a zebra for a beautiful rug. I do want to have the experience and be able to say "That one's mine." I thought that if there are inexpensive hides that could be made into accessory pillows or something, it might be a frugal option. Then I could afford to hunt one more species. I guess I'll look into it more. (I'm trying to figure out the best way to spend my budget.)

I would suggest a shoulder mount and have the back skin tanned in Africa. That will give you material for pillows, etc. There is a guy close to the airport that sells skins and mounts cheaper then at the airport. You could buy your skin for your rug from him and you will have a mount of he one you hunted, plus some pillows. ( Zebra looks great on a pestal.). I will look for his card.

Thanks, guys.

Sorry to have hijacked the thread...

I don't know your house setup, but do keep in mind a zebra rug is freaking huge and could literally take up your entire wall. I do like the shoulder mount / backskin idea from wesheltonj if you share my concern.

Of all my hides the zebra gets the most likes. I put mine on the back of my sofa at the lake house. You should definitely shoot your own. The pedestal mounts are awesome though. I will be taking another zebra this year to do the pedestal mount. Good luck on your hunt, kentol.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
