For the last few years I struggled with the idea of having a custom Left Hand 7 REM MAG built for Alpine hunting. It would replace the right hand Browning 7RM I sold a couple years ago.
I’ve been talking to Ty at MOA RIFLES for a few years about a 7RM and he kept telling me to build it in 7PRC… This rifle would have a 22” Carbon Barrel, 1:9 twist, Composite stock, and a few other custom items to make it a long range hunting rifle. Primary use would be alpine mountain hunting.
I saw Ty at Nashville SCI this year and we were discussing the upcoming Long Range school I was scheduled to attend. Told him I’d bring my 300 RUM and my .375 H&H. The .375 to test some Barnes TSX in 270 Grain.
Ty asked if I was ready to build the 7PRC. I said I wasn’t sure I needed another rifle because my 300 RUM was so good… But, it loves 210 Bergers and I want to shoot 208 Barnes LRX Then he said “just re-barrel the RUM”!
The 300 RUM is a legit 2,000 yard rifle and a proven killer. A couple Elk, Mule Deer, a few pigs, coyote. It’s been to 4 long range shoots and hit the mike target in 2 different events and 2,000 yard target in 2 other events, so the idea of modifying it didn’t immediately sit well with me. Not a lot of rounds down the 1:10 twist 26” barrel, probably around 200 Rounds. But it is long and heavy and I also want to shoot it suppressed.
Attended the school in late April and the RUM was shooting as well as ever. Was over a thousand yards by lunch and just after lunch hit the mile in a few more shots… Didn’t shoot the .375 because along with the RUM, I decided to have some work done it too.
