Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 African Super Grade 458 Win Mag. Value?

Simpsons have an org - not refurb - with org stock for $6k 1957

Hi all.

I hope everyone is well.

Perhaps a silly question, how does one decider if it is a Super Grade or not?

A family friend has a Pre ‘64 Model 70 in 458 Win Mag. Trying to help him get a price.

We are based in SA but having a US based value always helps immensely.

Thank you!
worth more in RSA to be honest !

I believe all the pre-64 .458 rifles were super grades...

The 1956 model had one cross bolt, no barrel recoil lug, and routinely destroyed the stocks.
First recall added a barrel lug.
They still cracked stocks in early 1957.
Finally they got two crossbolts and the barrel lug in mid 1957 and broken stocks became less certain.

The OP rifle has the wrong rear sight, first 1956 rear sight was a Lyman different from the subsequent "African Rear Sight."
The OP rifle has been totally refinished in metal and re-stocked, and rear sight is not original.

1957 model 70 458 win mag, the stock was replaced the original cracked at wrist,,english walnut!

Win458African1957,
That is a beautiful rifle.
I hope there are hidden crossbolts and pillars in that beautiful stock,
including behind the recoil lug on the barrel.

From Roger Rule, the early-1956 rear sight type, and replacement "African Rear Sight" later in 1956 onward:

And here are the variations from early 1956 to final improvements in 1957:

There has been great responses from so many individuals, I am grateful for the knowledge shared, and have learn an enormous amount of details pertaining to originality of firearms.

I have an clear idea on the sale price, especially in South Africa.

and will keep the tread going on my final sale price, so everyone here will be able to use my feedback on their justifications, when i find the stock ill add it to the sale, but if i sell the rifle with no stock and find the stock later on then ill also post the stock here for sale...
Did you end up selling this one?

Is this for sale, if so what is the price?

Its priceless awesome gun nicest model 70 in 458 win mag I have seen .

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
