I'm planning on visiting the RSA in the next few weeks and have a question. Has anyone flown on United Airlines from the US to Johannesburg and transported their rifles in a Pelican V800 "Vault hard case ?? I cannot find the maximum size allowances on United's website. My second question is if you did use this case, and did they have an upcharge for this exact case, last year I used my Pelican 1750 (approx. 4" shorter) and there wasn't a problem or additional charges. I don't want to get there only to find out I'm being charged for an "oversized" item especially when this is an international flight. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide and information that you can.

I’ve never been up charged for any rifle case on half a dozen trips. It seems that the size restrictions aren’t enforced on sporting equipment, like rifle cases.
Right. We pay an extra handling fee for guns so I presume that covers the oversize charge.

I use that very case. No additional charges or issues.

Got dinged $200 for gun case flying to Joberg in August. Have never been charged before (20 years of gun travel) and was not charged on return flight. No amount of arguing with several people at United got me a refund. People literally making crap up on the phone as they spoke “policy changed in 2024”, “only firearms don’t get the sporting equipment 115” limit…” I didn’t get dinged on way back and the five other people with guns on my flight were not charged either direction…it’s completely up to the person at the baggage counter. Someone actually said “maybe only the baggage agent on your outbound flight knows the rules”.
