Hi all. I’m currently making bottom metals for my 404J and 8x68. To get a double stack correct for the 404 correct it needs to be 26mm wide. My concern is that a 98 is only 27.5mm wide. Do people open the bottom of the action up to 26mm?

I didn't have cartridge specific bottom metal but milled the sides of the standard ex mil mag to about 1/2 their thickness and polished the lead into the rails. Had 3 down so not the same starting point as a cartridge specific mag as you show.

I’m thinking of opening it up as much as possible like this pic. Then playing with the feed rails.
