Hi all. I need some help from you gentlemen:

I am seriously looking at buying this rifle, I have researched the internet all over but cannot pinpoint exactly what it is. I cannot inspect the rifle since it is 600km from me, but have a few pictures. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

Looks like a build on a standard military action that has had the bottom metal with a release lever added, along with set triggers and scope friendly saftey. Do you have a better closeup of the side of the action? and a view of the bottom of the action with the proof marks would help in identifying.

All things considered it appears to be a good 'WORKING" rifle. I agree with AZDAVE, a standard military action with the mods. / addons mentioned. Since it appears to be in a gun-shop, did you ask about the condition of the bore?

Here is a link to JP Saur archives that may be of some help in identifying this rifle.

Unfortunately no further photos but I can ask the seller. Apparently the bore is still good and the rifle has not worked much. I can buy it for the price of lets say a CZ550, I am thinking this will be a bit more special and in a caliber that I want.

Yes I did, had two discussions with the store clerk. He cleaned and inspected the bore, no pitting and all seems good. Apparently it didn't work too much, I would want to use it as my go-to hunting rifle for plains game

To me it looks like Type B Mauser that has been restocked and had bolt handle modified. The bottom metal, including the triggers, is standard commercial Mauser, the barrel and sights look that way also (except barrels had barrel band sling swivel), the safety is stock Mauser 98. The only thing off, other than non-original stock) are the oval crest on top of the receiver and that barrel mounted sling swivel. Either way great rifle, in great calibre and excellent scope. I would not be afraid to buy this one. Buy it, take it apart so we can see markings. :D Either way just buy and enjoy.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
