Why Choose Panther Trackers?

Founded by Gavin Lipjes, an expert professional hunter with over two decades of experience, Panther Trackers has hunted leopards across their entire Southern African range, from the lush East Coast of Mozambique to the arid West Coast of Namibia. Our name, derived from the leopard’s taxonomical label Panthera Pardus, reflects our core expertise – tracking and hunting these majestic big cats. Our proficiency stems from decades of active pursuit across diverse leopard ecologies and habitats. Mastering leopard hunting is an art - one that requires thinking like a big cat, combining relentless tracking, analysed methodologies, and an insatiable passion for the hunt. This steady dedication ensures we consistently deliver memorable and productive safaris for our clients.

How do we maintain success?

Two standard methods of hunting the leopard include Bait & Blind and Scent Hounds. Each have their benefits, and we utilize the method most suited to the Sport Hunters’ requirements, aspirations, and abilities.
Hunting leopard over bait attracts the hunter who enjoys the reactive style of ambush and attack. This style is most effective when coupled with a seasoned knowledge of leopard activity concentrations and local habitat preference. Combining patience, experience, and resolute confidence will set the stage for the travelling hunter to claim an aged male rosetted cat.
Hunting leopard over hounds is a proactive form of pursuing these elusive cats. Our preferred method of hunting, this traditional style involves intense tracking and an in-depth knowledge of leopard ecology. We immerse ourselves in the world of the leopard, trusting our interpretation of leopard behaviour, incorporating the skill of our expert canine team, with sights set on harvesting the most aged male big cat in the 14-day hunting period.

When committing to a safari with Panther Trackers, it is not just the purchase of a hunting trip, it is securing an authentic African adventure. We prioritize:
  • Exceptional Success Rates, by operating only in premium safari areas with healthy leopard populations and proven records of achievement.
  • Superb Trophy Quality, our hunters consistently harvest gold-medal-quality trophies, reflecting our commitment to excellence.
  • Diverse Opportunities, while leopards are our focus, our safaris also offer options to hunt additional game such as Cape Buffalo, Roosevelt Sable, Livingstone’s Eland, Chobe Bushbuck, and many other endemic species.
  • Remote Comfort, our camps blend natural and fabricated materials, offering all the necessary amenities of a safari while maintaining the rustic charm of a remote hunting base. Whether enjoying the camaraderie of a group safari or traveling solo, our camps provide a memorable stay. Additional activities, such as tiger fishing or game viewing, can also be arranged for non-hunting companions.
  • Conservation Commitment, we operate exclusively in wilderness areas that play a vital role in African wildlife conservation. Your participation directly supports anti-poaching efforts and helps preserve these ecosystems for future generations. By placing value on wildlife, we contribute to their sustainable protection and conservation.
  • Reliability and Integrity, for over two decades, we have never failed to deliver on safari expectations, trophy shipments, or fair transactions.
  • Supreme Expertise, from safety and travel logistics to meeting your expectations, our team’s knowledge of African ecology and culture ensures that in 20 years of operation, we’ve maintained a flawless track record of delivering on every promise.
At Panther Trackers, we are dedicated to tailoring each safari to the individual hunter’s needs and goals. With our deep understanding of leopard ecology, expert guiding, and commitment to excellence, we guarantee a safari that tops expectations and delivers ensuing memories.

Hunting with Panther Trackers is more than a safari - it’s a journey into the world of the leopard, where every day is filled with adventure, discovery, and the promise of success.

Hunting Mozambique

Our safaris take place in Mozambique, a destination that offers a step back in time to the Africa romanticized in classic hunting literature. We operate across three main ecological zones:
  • Southern Miombo Woodlands: Dominated by majestic Granite Mountain formations, these woodlands present a proud landscape, offering a distinct challenge and ample opportunities for encountering other endemic game species like Crawshaw’s Zebra, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, and Johnstons Impala.
  • Coastal Evergreen Forests: Enriched with towering native hardwood timber, pockets of open savannas, and seasonal swamps, these forests provide a rich and diverse backdrop for other game species like Suni, Grey, Red, and Blue Duiker, Oribi, Roosevelt Sable, and Livingstone Eland.
  • Mixed Mopane Combretum Woodlands: Challenged by moderate rainfall, these savanna woodlands boast a rich variety of hardy tree species which thrive in well-drained soils, plus golden grasses which seasonally change the aspect of the environment. Southern Greater Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Burchell’s Zebra, and Spotted Hyena are regular additions to any safari.
Each region presents unique challenges and opportunities, with ample game species and splendid scenery to enhance your safari experience.

Hunting Methods:

Camps

Panther Trackers operate from a network of remote Camps bordering renowned wilderness areas such as Gorongosa National Park, and Gonarezhou National Park. These locations provide a consistent flow of game into the hunting blocks while directly supporting long-term conservation objectives.
Quota is carefully managed, with limited allocations ensuring sustainability.
Each season we secure multiple leopard tags along with a wide variety of dangerous game and plains game opportunities.
Camps are built with intention - constructed from natural materials and shaped by traditional methods. The result is a functional, authentic atmosphere that echoes the classic safari era, where practicality takes precedence over flamboyance.

Science: Panthera Pardus

The most observed solitary big cat comprehensibly also enjoys the widest range of Africa’s big cats and hunting prospects are available across most of the Southern African countries.

Realistic body weights of male leopards range from 60 kg (132lbs) to 85kg (188lbs) however in rare instance a brute is encountered that can tip the scales.

Crepuscular behaviour, defined as primarily active during twilight ( dusk and dawn) best describes the Leopards heightened periods of activity, although a stricter nocturnal movement is more commonly adopted in areas of greater persecution.

Since the leopard does not restrict its feeding behaviour to live kills only, it is possible to lure the big cat to presented bait. Leopard scent is relatively ‘heavy’ and expert hounds can track the nocturnal travels of the elusive cat. Therefore, the leopard is hunted either OVER hounds or OVER bait. Never – with dogs – which describes the method known as coursing.

Regarded as the fiercest of the solitary big cats, the leopard is also accepted as the least likely to inflict a fatal attack.
