458 Lott with RL15

Guys, I am looking for some advice on reloading the Lott with RL15 since I have a bunch of it sitting around.

I have several books and they vary widely in their max loads.

Swift lists 83 gr with the 500 gr a-frame
Hornady lists 77 gr with their 500 gr series.
And woodliegh lists 85 gr with their 500 gr bullets.

82 gr gives me 2150 with the a-frame out of my 22" barrel. Nice groups too.

77 gr with the 500 gr DGS gives me 2000.

I have a pile of DGSs that I got on sale and I was hoping to work up a load to go with the a-frame load.

Anyone have any thoughts on going above the book? I don't understand how much difference there could be between the woodliegh and the DGS in terms of pressure generation and yet the two of them have widely different max loads listed.

Any ideas on working up a load with the DGS to match the a-frame load? I just want a solid to shoot reasonably close to and at the same velocity as my softs load.

Yup. Healthy but manageable. Like my 500 mag revolver. It's an aquired taste but once you get over the initial shock it becomes fun to blow up water bottles with.

I like it when somebody else it's an acquired taste. My 458 Lott is a Ruger Model #1 and that beast has a healthy kick.

Different bullets have different bearing surfaces, even if they weigh the same

Don't know fore sure, it could be case capacity and bullet seating.

But keeping bullet weight the same, physics surgests you should be fine, particularly if you start with a minimum load.

The DGS load actually has more case capacity than the load for the a-frame.

The part that really has me scratching my head is the difference in loads between Hornady and Woodliegh. They are very similar bullets yet the minimum load for the Woodliegh is 4 gr. over the max load for the Hornady.

Then start with the hornady minimum load. And pull the trigger with a long peace of string.

I would go up 1 grain at a time and check the brass to see if they get sticky on ejection. As long as they don't, you should be ok. I don't have a pressure guage myself. If you get within 100fps of your A-Frames, your point of impact at 100 yds should be very close and should not matter. It is fun to play with.
