1” Tube Scopes

I'd suggest that FOV is more important at distances under 300m than max magnification. You don't need to be able to count the fleas crawling on your elk's balls to be able to put a bullet in the boiler room.

Something from 1-3X on the low end, and no higher than 10X. You have already nailed it on the objective size. a 100 yd FOV at lower power will be ideally about 50-100 feet. The lower the magnification on the low end, the bigger the FOV gets.

Leupold makes a VX3 in 2.5-8x36, I'm seriously considering dressing my 280 AI with one of those.

I have a nice Vortex 4-12 on my 6.5x55. The FOV really sucks compared to 1-3X - 100 FOV on low power I think is around 25 or 30 feet. At 50 yards, that turns into 12-15 feet FOV.

Swaro 3-9. I have one on my .22 and it works great.
I would go with the largest objective that you can fit on the rifle/rings combo. That extra light gathering at the first and last moments of the day really does make a difference, especially if you have to spot something before shootable light and then move closer.

Grandpa was from Germany, but the language didn’t get handed down!

I’m not sure if you can directly swap ring sizes on EAW bases. I’m going to reach out to a reputable gunsmith in the area to see what he has to say.

You can swap ring sizes on one set of bases with EAW mounts.

Europtics has a good deal on the Swaro Z3 3-10 x 42, but they are on backorder. Getting it to Canada is another issue too.

That's a pretty good deal...that scope has 22.5º FOV, or about 120' at 100 yards
I will have to check but I don't think a 3 power scope could have a FOV of 120'.

It is kind of a head scratcher, to be sure. way higher than I expected at 3X. 40 or 50 is normal at that power.

but the formula is FOVº * 52.5 /10 (for FOV at 100 yards)

fair enough. that makes more sense than 120'

on the eurooptic page, it shows this at the top

Swarovski Z3 riflescope features:

  • Lightweight, slim design
  • Light transmission: 90%
  • Eye Relief: 3.54 in
  • Waterproof up to 13 feet
  • Field of View: 22.7 degrees
  • Weight: 12 - 14.5 oz

And this at the bottom (which I totally missed, I just did the FOV calculation because i knew 22º was pretty wide).

  • Field of View: 39 - 13.5'

30mm rings sure would increase the options for optics

They are going for $1000 here, but no one has them in stock.

Getting a scope shipped here isn’t a problem, is the deal is good enough!

Amazon shows one in stock. BRH reticle. $799.
Cabellas shows stock for $899.

Also a few at Scheels:

The rifle showed up yesterday and I have to say that I want expecting to to be a svelt as it is!

I’m bouncing back and forth between the Z3 or a VX3 2.5-8x36. I feel like the trimmer the scope the better

Both are good options but I prefer the light gathering of the swaro for low light - minimal but noticeable difference
Is the extra light worth $200? I’ve never had a serious look through any other scopes than the leupolds that I already have, so I’m ignorant when it comes to optics

Yes. I would suggest asking some guys in your area if you can get a couple scopes together right at sunset and compare the scopes side by side - same time. You will be able to make the right decision for you. I did this for a few work buddies who had differing opinions on scopes - they were able to look through Zeiss, Leupold, kahles, swaro, bushnell, tasco, burris etc… very informative
