Controlled round feed for Dangerous Game

If only you knew Hunter-Habib a few years earlier... Ah, well. All is not lost. I have visited and hunted in Australia quite a few times over the years ever since 1975. In 1975, you could find many excellent B.S.A Majestic rifles on the secondhand racks of most Australian gun shops. When I last...

Controlled round feed for Dangerous Game

Not all push feed rifles are created equally. When I first began big game hunting in the early 1970s (with my first African safari being to Kenya in 1974), push feed rifles were everywhere and only two CRF rifles were being produced at the time (the Czech BRNO ZKK series and the Serbian...

Is the 7mm prc suitable for plains game?

The 7mms are a sweet class of caliber. I personally use a 7x57mm Mauser and have had immense success with mine over the years. Now, taking the immensely high velocities of the 7mm PRC into account, it would be quite counter productive to use cup & core style bullets in this caliber. Bullet...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

You’re a true inspiration. My father turns 93 years old this year and is still extremely passionate about hunting jack snipe in the local rice paddy fields.

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

I apologize, @375Ruger416 . I share the exact same sentiments as you. Most of us come to these forums as a means of recreation to take our stress away from the shackles of daily responsibilities. And to share our mutual love for hunting, firearms & Africa. Not to fight with other members.

    Show off your 100-year-old guns

Not a sporting firearm, but I EDC (Every Day Carry) a Webley & Scott Model 1921 in .32 ACP ever since the Indo-Pak war of 1971. Officers were allowed to purchase their own sidearms during the war from the firearms depository in Gilatola military cantonment. It still shoots sharp & straight.

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

It’s quite alright, Altitude Sickness. It‘s always good to question whatever is presented to you. Even if the presenter is someone like me (and I’m definitely a very mediocre fellow myself). I don’t mind at all. I always encourage fellow members to call me out if they are skeptical regarding...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Dear IvW, It's always good to doubt whatever you read. I myself have doubts too about a lot of things which other members claim. I don't mind your questions, even though I'm old enough to understand that some of them are expressed with a tone of skepticism. No, no. Rather, I encourage it...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

No, IvW. This is a bull. Game laws in rural Northern Thailand were not very strictly enforced up until the late 1980s (except for the jungle elephant which was ferociously protected even back in those days). As a matter of fact, Seladang were regularly hunted by the tribal people in rural...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

The .577 Nitro Express FMJ solid bullets with the steel jacket jacket were manufactured by ICI Kynoch from 1950-1962 at their factory in Great Britain and the last consignment of .577 Nitro Express ammunition was loaded by them in 1967 (from components manufactured prior to 1962). By contrast...

The Ideal African "Light Rifle", that is the Question?

A wise concept. My predecessor, Yousuf Salauddin Ahmad (the first Chief Conservator of Forests of Pakistan and author of "With The Wild Animals Of Bengal") preferred to hunt Axis deer in the Sundarban mangrove forests with a .450/400 Nitro Express, because one never knew when one was going to...

The Ideal African "Light Rifle", that is the Question?

If dangerous game is on the menu, then .375 Holland & Holland Magnum is hard to beat. If you’re only after plains game, then a .30-06 Springfield gets my vote. 7x57mm Mauser is also always excellent. The 7x57mm Mauser (with 170-175Gr bullets) is perfectly adequate for any non dangerous...

Magnificent catch (the Super Grade stock is just icing on the cake). I assume post 1992-pre 2006 New Haven manufacture ? Since you have both Cape buffalo & lion on your menu, I'd highly recommend 300Gr Hornady DGX Bonded factory loads. If only Cape buffalo is on the menu, then I'd strongly...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

I agree wholeheartedly. My bias against the investment casting method reflects more about my own narrow minded & outdated views that it does about the reliability of rifle actions built by investment casting. For instance, the old Spanish Santa Barbara Mauser Model 98 actions (that were...

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Yeah. I like Granite Mountain Arms actions best. P.S: When Mike Roden first starting building the Granite Mountain Arms actions, they really were forged until his nephew, John took over the business. I personally view the CNC machining as an improvement in terms of quality control.
  23. Hunter-Habib

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Very difficult to say. But I just find them to be extremely reliable. For instance: I really like the fact that the Granite Mountain Arms actions are forged, as opposed to a lot of rifle actions which are/ were formed by a less costly process called "Investment Casting".

What are the ideal components of a Control Round Feed action, and which actions have the best features?

Among currently manufactured actions, my top three picks would be: 1) Granite Mountain Arms (MY FAVORITE) 2) Waffen Prechtll 3) Armeria Concari Super Mauser Magnum Among actions that aren't being manufactured anymore: 1) Brevex (MY FAVORITE) 2) BRNO ZKK Series 3) Pattern 14 Enfield I also like...

    Which Elephant Rifle and cartridge?

IvW, you're most likely talking about the same Con Van Wyk. But I think that there's a slight discrepancy in the dates somewhere. The Con I refer to was mauled by a client's wounded lion BEFORE 1987 in Zimbabwe. He suffered bite marks to the head before the lion was shot by the client. The...

    Which Elephant Rifle and cartridge?

You could be right. It's not fair for me to give an inaccurate figure by speculating now (after all these years). Which Elephant Rifle and cartridge?

In my humble experience... This varies from hunter to hunter, @cajunchefray Some of my hunting peers simply cannot tolerate recoil and would prefer to hunt elephant with a 7x57mm Mauser (like WDM Bell) if it were legal. Some of them can barely control the recoil of a .375 Holland & Holland...

I’ve successfully shot two bull elephants (so far) in Botswana & Zimbabwe with the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum. I dropped one with a perfect side brain shot, but the other gave me some real difficulty after taking an entire magazine full of 300Gr Hornady round nosed steel jacketed FMJ...

Article on heavier vs lighter for caliber bullet penetration

Personally speaking, I am an advocate of heavier-for-weight bullets at a relatively modest velocity. For instance: 175Gr bullets at 2400 FPS for 7x57mm Mauser 220Gr bullets at 2400 FPS for .30-06 Springfield 300Gr bullets at 2500 FPS for .375 Holland & Holland Magnum 50 years of field...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Test with a magnet for steel content. Pre 1950 Kynoch FMJ solids had a gilding metal jacket (with the exception of the .350 Rigby Magnum and the .416 Rigby) and thus, will not attract a magnet. Kynoch FMJ solids made between 1950-1969 will have steel jackets (courtesy of the combined...

Federal Power Shok 270 gr .375.. Reviews Please

I used the 300Gr Federal Power Shok factory loads on two lions. My son-in-law also used it for one lion. Perfect for double lung shots where the point of aim is the soft region behind the shoulder. You WILL encounter jacket-core separation if this bullet strikes the scapula/humerus/shoulder...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

@Certus & @Wishfulthinker580 Here are more photographs of the .505 Gibbs. I agree with both your assessments. On a .505 Gibbs, I'd personally prefer a Limb Saver recoil pad and iron sights (wide V backsights & uncovered ivory bead foresight). I didn't think it through when I posted the first...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Yes. Definitely. All other factors being equal, a 900Gr solid from a .600 Nitro Express through the lungs of a hippopotamus bull drops them noticeably faster and more violently than when they are hit in the same region with a .458 Winchester Magnum, .404 Jeffery or .375 Holland & Holland Magnum...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Well, IvW... I'm afraid I can't say exactly with the DZOMBO bullets. But I think that Buffalo Bore's new line of .600 Nitro Express ammunition (900Gr Cutting Edge Bullets monolithic brass flat nosed Safari Solids at 1950 FPS) is quite similar to what a 900Gr DZOMBO MARK 6 brass monolithic solids...

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Jeff now shifted to a William Evans boxlock ejector in .500 Nitro Express because field experience has taught him that the 570Gr bullet at 2150 FPS (of the .500 Nitro Express) will out-penetrate the 750Gr bullet at 2050 FPS (of the .577 Nitro Express). He also recently purchased a pre-World War...
