Gentleman , may I give my opinion here based on almost 30 years in the Safari business.
1. There are excellent taxidermists both in South Africa and in the US.
2. There are truly horrible taxidermists in both countries.
3. If you decide to raw prep or dip and ship , remember , you still need a...
Sir , I suggest you contact Adele From Hunters permits Africa.
She will shuttle you to your destination in Polokwane at a very reasonable rate. She's been doing transport and rifle import permits for hunters for years.
I don't know him personally and I have not hunted with Craig. I know a few outfitters that have. Like any celebrity one will get conflicting reports. Even so , I personally think we should not be sharing hear say about anyone on a public platform. If there are facts ..say it. Especially don't...
South Africa has definitely not done itself any favors with some of the questionable practices.
I think the hunter should also do due diligence when booking a hunt and ask for references and do his homework.
The canned lion reputation will never be lived down. That's just the way it is. It...
The thread has , expectedly , turned into a canned hunting thread with people pointing fingers out of high moral positions. The question is simply ... Do you think this only happens in South Africa ? If you do , then you are very very uninformed and /or naïve.
Your 30 06 will be just fine for a plains game hunt. No need to take anything else. 2 boxes of ammo should do the trick. 30 06 is such a common caliber in South Africa that you will be able to get ammo anywhere should you run out for some unforeseen reason. And if you're worried , take 3 boxes...
I am no expert on double rifles but I have owned a number of them and have been around them plenty in the past 27 years of Dangerous game guiding. A few observations if you wish. This is just from first hand experience and my personal opinion. Remember , advise is worth what you pay for it...lol...
more and more hunters are not doing shoulder mounts and full mounts but instead just doing skull mounts. Saves up a lot of money to be spent elsewhere. Thee display is then the skull mount with a picture next to it of the hunter with the trophy animal. Looks great. takes up less space also.
Gentlemen , I'm not a gunsmith. lets hear what Verney has to say. Surely the new barrels have to be regulated with the rifle and cannot be just sent seperately ? Double gunsmiths could advise here.
All true. MS does own a 450/400 though. In my opinion the sweetest shooting double caliber out there. I believe MS said that his grand mother shoots a 470. lol. I think its a good hunting caliber.
When we ask the question what size caliber is NEEDED then the answer is....one can kill anything...
Sir , I would ask your PH what his recommendations are. Both scopes will work. The conditions at hand will however dictate which one. only your PH knows that.
Enjoy the hunt. Nothing like hunting Elephant.

100 %. The 458wm is an excellent point in case. With modern solid bullets like Woodleigh , Dzombo and Barnes , the 600 will penetrate even at sub 2 000 velocities.
Taking into account the relative cost of the hunts that its used for , its really not expensive to shoot.
and to boot.. its a...
I have had numerous of my clients hunt their Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo with my 600. They were all pleasantly surprised by the manageability of the rifle under recoil.
To each his own. In the end we all shoot what we shoot well. And so it should be.
I love my 600.
My apologies . for some reason my complete post was not posted.
A Texan friend of mine shot his 600 loaded with 900gr Barnes solids clean through 7 trash bins full of water. Don't believe the stories out there about the 600 not penetrating enough. In 27 years of dangerous game guiding .I have...
I'm not sure what the old ivory hunters were using for powder and bullets. I own a 600 NE and have used it extensively on Elephant , Buffalo and Rhino. Shooting 900 gr Dzombo bullets at a touch over 2 000 feet per second. It is devastating. It is in fact my back up rifle of choice. I have used...
