35 Whelen with 250 gr Norma Oryx

Seems that the problem is the CFE 223 powder profile on GRT afterall. I plugged in load data for 308w from Hodgdon chart with 150gr bullet and the simulation shows similarly excessive pressure. Hodgdon provides their measured pressures to compare so it's quite safe to say false alarm. Sadly it's...

35 Whelen with 250 gr Norma Oryx

64gr of CFE223 with 250gr bullet simulated in Gordons Reloading Tool gives bit over 70000 psi p_max when max allowed for 35W is 58000 psi. Why not just use a bigger cartridge if you need that much?

SAKO S20, the latest and greatest?

Considering the hype everywhere in Finland last spring before the reveal, I was thoroughly underwhelmed by this. I mean it is essentially just T3x that doesn't need immediate stock replacement for accuracy but apparently they did years of research into most repulsive looking and feeling polymers...

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

Default water capacity for 9,3x62 is 78 grains. 35w is 70.6gr.

If the 9.3x62 became the new legal minimum?

9,3x64 is excellent example of cartridge that should've excelled but ended up being almost forgotten. Then again, it doesn't have benefit of lighter recoil over 375HH and it has same limitations of legality for DG as 9,3x62. Kind of a lose-lose compromise.

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

Plenty of cartridges have become nearly obsolete despite being superior to the competition by numbers. Most of the people choose what is available as guns and ammo, then manufacturers largely make what people buy most so the cycle naturally leads to less cartridges being popular over time...

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

Obviously nobody knows real pressures. Individual rifles do have differences already in how the pressure marks appear. Either way, with modern firearms you can increase load until brass starts showing marks and then back off some. Primers might have more differences especially between brands and...

    35 Whelen vs 9.3x62

I would really like to see these numbers shot head to head over chrono. There is a difference in CIP/SAAMI pressure rating for the cartridges, 9,3x62 is bit lower but that's irrelevant really. The brass is nearly identical from the case head and one has larger hole i.e. with same pressure it...

If the 9.3x62 became the new legal minimum?

Honestly though, I dare say 250gr Nosler E-tip fired at 2950fps out of 338LM would kill any DG just as well as any of the ancient big bores but that's not the hill I'm going to die on. Nevertheless your thinking is flawed in sense that 9.3mm is legal minimum in some parts of Africa while .35...

If the 9.3x62 became the new legal minimum?

That was just the simulation. I tried one run with RS 60 behind 250gr E-tip and there's certainly potential but my first series stopped bit short. Then hunting season came and put an end to the experimenting. I'll have another go with RS 52 and 250gr TTSX at some point and will definitely post...

If the 9.3x62 became the new legal minimum?

From 24" barrel 9,3x62 could probably do 2600fps with 285gr Norma Oryx and RL-17. Then again, I chose 9,3 to have enough gun for moose, boar and bears with short barrel and copper bullets so my goals are bit different, more like 250gr TTSX or one of the 230gr options.

If the 9.3x62 became the new legal minimum?

I don't know if I've asked before but how long is the barrel on that Marlin? I've been tempted to try and one up these numbers from 9,3x62 but I'm starting to suspect 20" barrel is going to be bit of a handicap there.

    Blaser R8 for Dangerous Game

Loctite in everything between barrel and scope is pretty standard for less delicate use. Some even put some in the blaser QD notches and leave the scope mounted. I've used small dot of blue locktite in the scope ring under the scope and also some on the ring screws, although one must be very...

Well I've Done It Now!!! (Joining The R8 Cult)

I think it is actually lightest cartridge for mag-bolt head? Considering I have 9,3x62 I'd probably pair it with 7x64 for africa. For domestic purposes 6.5Manbun is perfect smaller caliber but it's a match barrel so not something I intend to walk with all day.

If the 9.3x62 became the new legal minimum?

Not really. There's no question it can do at least as much damage as 375HH at both ends of the rifle. Rather the question is what would the new limit be? 9.3mm and 5000J? That's actually achievable from x62. 5400J found in some places isn't happening with factory ammo.

    9.3 x 62 non-lead loads

    Blue collar blaser

Savage Axis is hugely popular here as well since Sako raised Tikka T3x prices.. Limit for big game I didn't know about. Just thought people didn't like hauling extra weight on elk hunts. Honestly it's pretty rare situation where you need to get second shot out faster than one can with a bolt...

    Blue collar blaser

Well now the message chain got messed up properly. Could've picked my words better. I meant that R8 has plenty of options in that price point. What I really wonder though, is how much is there market for straight pull in US when semi-autos are readily available for most?
  20. samu

    Blue collar blaser

No it won't. If you only want a straight pull rifle, you're much better served eg. by Merkel Helix. It's faster to reload, offers more stock options, uses standard picatinny rail pieces for scope mount and has plenty of options with 5rd magazine that costs less than half of R8 spare mag that...

    Blue collar blaser

Adding to the pile of irrelevant innovations with Steel action, Heym, Strasser, Lynx, Merkel Helix and Browning maral. Chapuis had the wits to copy the magazine above the trigger that makes R8 stand above the others but in typical french manner made look cheap and shoot poorly.

    AWD vehicles in snow opinions

Lot of debate over studded tyres here in Finland too. Basically they're most needed in south where the ice builds up but that's also where they cause most problems in form of small particles and road wear. My current car came with studded tyres but when they need to be replaced I'll probably go...

    AWD vehicles in snow opinions

Considering safety on road, AWD is quite insignificant. All cars have two wheels for steering and brakes on all corners. It's all about proper tyres. Íf there's lot of back and forth where water melts and then freezes over, studded is unbeatable.

    AWD vehicles in snow opinions

Depends a lot on quality of the snow. Fresh snow in freezing conditions, you can easily plow through more than ground clearance worth. When it slightly melts and freezes again, it will scrape off any unnecessary parts on the car in no time. Personally I use Scoda Octavia 4x4 and tend to get...

Blaser R8 - Why do African PH’s and Alaskan Bear Guides Choose Not To Use Blaser R8’s?

Current Tikka T3x is made only with one frame and three different sizes are accomplished by changing the length of the bolt stop and filling up the rear of the magazine. I never measured but I guess it tops out somewhere around 85 mm COL. It does come in 9,3x62 though

Blaser R8 - Why do African PH’s and Alaskan Bear Guides Choose Not To Use Blaser R8’s?

You're quite right. In most semi-sensible countries the extra barrels are not counted as firearms. Then there's bright star in the north where I need to apply for same 90€/pc firearms lisence for every single barrel I want for my R8. At least they give you discount if you apply for multiple at...

    6.5 Creedmoor

Even in scandinavia the 6.5 scales are slowly tipping towards Creedmoor over Sex Edition. Factory loads are tiny bit faster, US brands have much better variety in CM while Norma and Lapua are giving big finger to 6,5mm users. Norma by refusing to publish their existing and tested 6.5 Eco strike...

    6.5 Creedmore for Australia

Bigger question is why not call it 6.5 Hornady. TC was developed for another company and flopped magnificently so no wonder they didn't want to keep the name. Notice how 6.5PRC and 300PRC also are developed by Hornady and have names that don't directly refer to them. Something I wonder is if the...

    6.5 Creedmore for Australia

Wheel has definitely been reinvented and I suspect it will happen again and again as long as there's one fool left to part with their money for sake of novelty. 6.5 Creedmore for Australia

Shot my first moose with 9,3x62 just week ago. Through shoulder joint and heart. 6.5 Creedmore for Australia

I suppose as newer cartridge the PRC should be just the right cup of latte for @CBH Australia.. the friend I mean. My point was really somehow it just feels that past 4000J it would be good idea to increase the hole diameter. For a short case the 6.5OneChina gets quite close to the win mag...

    6.5 Creedmore for Australia

Far superior is bit of a reach.. 308 has only 500J advantage over creedmoor at muzzle and inherently sheds energy faster so the difference is only 300J at 300m. None of the mentioned are designed for hunting but the bullet doesn't know that. If maximizing PBR is your thing the relevant argument...

    6.5 Creedmore for Australia

6.5PRC is the sensible 6.5mm magnum that doesn't make your barrels single use only. Seriously though, Finland changed the law allowing 115 grain bullets with kinetic energy at 100m more than 1900J for hunting moose, bear and wild boar. I haven't heard from anyone using the opportunity on bear...

    9.3X62 for Cape Buffalo?

Bringing the x64 into the discussion is like recommending 300WM when someone asks what 308win can do. 9.3x62 is great because it's cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, easy on shoulder and still gets the job done in right hands where legal. I think it's perfect cartridge for moose sized game withing...

    9.3 x 62 non-lead loads

I have Eco-strikes with me this season. No luck yet. Sako Blade will become available for 9.3x62 among few others soon, also around 230gr weight and similar MV to Norma. E-S clocked 780m/s out of 20” R8 barrel. I tried loading up E-tip and got to 777m/s but decided further development isn’t...

Are you confused easily by ammo brands?

Happened to ask Norma why there is no Eco-strike in 6.5mm calibers. I've been looking for accurate lead free hunting ammo for 6.5 Creedmoor and just didn't seem to make sense to leave out this popular size from the lineup. The answer was not what I expected. They have made the 6.5 mm Eco-strike...

Is an illuminated reticle essential for Cape buffalo hunting?

Bright and small red dot on reticle does make aiming faster with a scope. Also it allows to use up to 3x magnification like red dot sight both eyes open with little practice. To have any benefit in daylight the dot has to be bright enough to paint itself in your view even when your eyes are...

    Longer shots 9.3x62

    Longer shots 9.3x62

What 9,3x64 can do is irrelevant though. The question is how far 9,3x62 can be stretched if need be. If one has an option to buy another rifle, 300WM will beat 9,3x62 past 300m on any game. At 500m it will already have 1000J more kinetic energy and margin of error for distance and wind...

    Longer shots 9.3x62

I have asked and Norma replied they don't have such plans at the moment. Apparently they scaled the production for producing factory ammo and changing it would require demand that just isn't quite there at the moment. Oddly enough, 9.3mm TTSX is available pretty much anywhere around here in...
